RE: https://theforkiverse.com/@taylorlorenz/115867181742104333

seeing tech journalists still this confused how to use the fediverse this far into things; we should take it as a sign that we need to rethink how this whole cross instance cross domain flow works

@liaizon

Counterpoint:

When one user creates one account; does something blockworthy (in someone else's opinion); and is blocked.

A different user creates 12 accounts; does the same. To achieve a comparable outcome to above, a user now must hunt an additional 11 accounts.

Normalising *many* multiple accounts (Fedimaxxing??) is advocating for a spam-like tactic so as to play by different rules; it acts against a foundational norm (not rule) for the protocol's block tools effectiveness.

@liaizon not sure what you mean exactly, but:

multi-accounting is great, and is probably a feature that could be explained better to non-fedizens (I don't like that term, but basically, people not already familiar with the fediverse - because as you said in this thread elsewhere, it's mostly nerds and weirdos who end up here and stick around)

the apps that people can currently use to experience the fediverse lean more tool than experience. not sure who said that "Mastodon is a party bus, Pleroma is a mech suit" but basically, I think from the perspective of people used to walled garden experiences, who never look at settings, Mastodon is this very intricate thing that you need to set up in order to make it work the way you want it to or expect it to

when people log in, fedizens are often very friendly to newbies but a lot of how they help is like "here's some homework for you!"

and even that's a mixed bag. it might be that no one is friendly to you because you're on a shit server, not that it's your fault, necessarily. obviously there are issues of harassment that happen too, which might come off as initially worse on here than it is in a walled garden

it seems like the best response is on the app level. one could take an app that makes multiaccounting very easy - I think #Tusky is a great option, personally, but there are others - and add some actually game-like features. I've seen bad example of this, like how every time I make a Discourse account (I believe), I get a star for making my first post, looking at my Settings for the first time, or whatever, lol

but you could offer, like, an animated intro - which an experienced user could skip. perhaps offering a better array of generalist, public servers, and even offering to make another identity or two, so people get the concept right away

@liaizon the online masses love, and mostly understand, how throwaway accounts on Reddit (are supposed to) work, after all

there's hope for them, lol, if we of the fediverse can convey the concept better

@nauss there are lots of solutions, maybe too many. but right now non of them are very good for people who are not already quite tech literate

@laurenshof we have gone thru so many waves of figuring how this place works (or doesn't) its always interesting to see how that works from others perspectives in real time. I wish we would more easily take these into account when designing stuff here but alas it doesn't seem to make much of a difference

@liaizon as a counterpoint, maybe this is the fediverse's immune system protecting us from tech journalists

@brennen yeah I mean that can be true too, but sooner or later we have to decide if this project is meant as a play pen for nerds or really a base layer for social media online, and I am not alone in the hope and dreams of building a base layer of infra for communication that doesn't rely on central gate keepers. it needs to fit both camps

@liaizon i guess i'm grateful for my clubhouse for nerds, but also think of public-by-default social media on the whole as such a doomed pattern that it seems like fedi's whole existence only works insofar as it's shielded by friction, relative unpopularity, and incomprehensibility from mainstream spaces. but i'm also sort of at a point where it's harder and harder not to be sincere in thinking the entire goddamn internet should be destroyed post haste, so what do i know.
