RE: https://mas.to/@fsinn/115874067289064749

Also: look at what's going on in Iran right now.

THAT is what has to happen if you let the religious authoritarians get bedded in and you wait too long.

If they don't get the Ayatollah's out this month, they'll hang thousands. And if they DO get them out, probably thousands will die in the process.

Waiting for Project 2025 and the white nationalist cops in ICE to politely pack up and go home is a non-option.

@cstross Government NEVER cedes power willingly under any circumstances. The post-9/11 powers given to the executive branch enabled all of this and not a breath has been uttered to rescind them.

Every single violation, every injustice, every abuse will be continued after Trump unless they are forced to correct it. And if they are, every other bill on the floor of the legislature will attempt to do this again.

That’s our real problem.

@cstross
What's going on in Iran, is a CIA operation.

@gravitysrainbow Naah. It's far too big, and the regime is far too unpopular—this is the latest of a whole bunch of uprisings going back 47 years.

I'm not saying the CIA isn't in there too, but it's like saying the kid playing with the box of matches is the entire wildfire.

@cstross @gravitysrainbow

Why are you propagandising on behalf of the USA and Israel?

You're normally pretty good on analysing events but on Iran you seem to be unusually biased.

There are legitimate protests in Iran just as there are in the USA and UK.

But there is massive interference and agitation from the West (incl Israel).

If you know anything about Iran or any of the countries in that region you know that we don't petrol bomb our own mosques with children inside.

@cstross What's going on in Iran right now is what happens when you put murderous sanctions on a state and then fund an insurrectionary movement.

There are moderate tendencies in Iran but unlike the brutal dictatorships of Syria, Saudi Arabia and the UAE they wouldn't support our genocide in Palestine and so we seek to start a civil war and put a monarchy back in power.

Politely waiting for us to start bombing Iran just empowers those calling for further crackdowns in USA and your own Scotland

I wonder why?

@penel0pe @caoilte I think a lot of Americans are obsessively convinced that everything bad happening anywhere in the world is because of Amurrica. It really isn't.

@cstross @penel0pe The sanctions were US instigated and led. We must suspect a significant portion of the lethal unrest is led and funded by US proxy Israel (they proved the capacity in the war last year and have been boasting about it this year).

Iran was on a credible path to reform and normalization in 2014. It would have been slow and inter-generational but trade and diplomacy were healing relations internally and externally.

US isn't responsible for everything bad, but it is for this.
