Recently we have seen a massive spike of calls to /api/v1/instance/domain_blocks, from all kinds of players, including Google, Microsoft, Chinese IP addresses, a server farm in Cyprus and one belonging to an online casino farm on Malta. Those happen on medic.cafe as well as #Hule, which does not support domain blocks (yet).

I am wondering: what is the value of those (~4k today) spiders? Who would benefit from knowing which instances are blocked by whom? I am aware, that there's a bot run by an "edgy" MAGA/Hatepost/Memefarm instance, but this massive interest across actors makes me wonder.

@mikka

I think the #AI bots are fed and 'know' the entire #API of most #fedi apps, and just walk out each and every pathway of our #SocialGraph, in search for stuff to scrape.

AI data hunger comes on top of #SurveillanceCapitalism data-is-the-new-oil exploitation of personal information, and our 馃ェ #PII is attractively served in this largely wholly unprotected #fediverse of ours.

Lastly a medical-themed instance more than anything will attract data vultures: 馃構 Juicy #privacy-sensitive nuggets.

@smallcircles One problem I see from that comes from Luke Smith's commentary on AI, in which it's nothing more than a big, flip-off program. It's the programmers and trainers of the AI who make it operate in such an unlawful manner.

AI will replace politically compromised jobs anyway, and I find that a good thing.

@smallcircles No worries. I'd be happy to provide the video via DM if you want proof of that.

The bottom part, however, is something I noticed myself as a user of AI myself.

No need. Perhaps or even most likely in a decade we look entirely differently onto all of this, when everything has clicked in place.

@bret in his brilliant talk "The future of Programming" mentions how Kathleen Booth, the woman who wrote the first assembly language, was berated by Von Neumann for even proposing to waste valuable compute on such things. "Get back to punch cards, and quick!" ..
