Personal websites, made by individuals, are social media. They have 1 author, are open to anyone on the Internet public and usually provide means for comments and conversation based on the initial topic post.

Social media is any digital medium, websites and applications, that enable people to create and share data/information or to participate in social networking (creating relationship connections by having a conversation on common topic with other people).

The term ‘social media’ is one of the most impressive bits of marketing in my lifetime. It was coined to describe platforms that exist to build psychological profiles of users to attempt to influence their behaviour, mostly for commercial purposes, though increasingly for political ones. I prefer to refer to them as ‘advertising platforms’ because ‘propaganda platforms’ requires too much explanation.
