@graydon @Photo55 @rootwyrm Yup. I'll believe we're getting there when farm tractors and combine harvesters run on batteries. (Never mind synthetic fertilizers.)

Nitrogen fixing seems the sort of thing that could be done in a fission plant. Heat, steam, atmosphere ...

Phosphorus seems to be our next trouble.

I think there are still pictures of lines of vehicles going across huge farms, combine harvesters depositing grain into a queue of trucks beside them.

I can imagine a battery truck joining in, and heading back to recharge, or indeed a grain truck that offers electricity in return.

The power and energy doesn't seem to be ridiculously high, and electric drives are good at low speed smooth torque.

@cstross @graydon @Photo55 @rootwyrm You can already buy electric tractors and farm equipment, and in sunny climes farmers can charge their farm equipment so saving money of fuel. Some farmers are leading the charge with 100% renewably powered farms. For example this farm in NZ. It also saves them money. https://www.hbfuturefarming.org/news/article/158
