I wanted to start doing this as a tradition on Christmas Day, going out for Chinese food. My mother was elderly, and I was, as she once threw in my face, no longer Catholic. I had a long drive home, 2.5 hours after diner/lunch, and we had, as we had always done, exchanged gifts on Christmas Eve.
I proposed it, mentioned that I thought it would be fun and very Christmassy to spend the day in solidarity with our non Christian friends/community.

She looked at me as if I had grown a second head. Confused, bewildered, never got into the spirit of the thing, and taking her anywhere was like taking a hostage. Acquiescent with an expression of profound unhappiness, and if I inquired, complete denial of any emotion what-so-ever.
The second largest city in our state. We went to 2 open places and at each the service was so poor that we left after 10 minutes.
And leaving scandalized her so badly I took her home and left.
