It’s interesting how many people think wanting privacy means you’re doing something nefarious. The fact is, privacy is about sharing what you want with whom you choose.

(I don’t recall who wrote these words or where I originally saw them. I only made the graphic.)

#Privacy #InfoSec #OpSec #BigBrother

Illustration of some eyes looking straight at you followed by text that reads “I need privacy, not because my actions are questionable. But because your judgment and intentions are.”

@markwyner People who argue against privacy in these ways are at least somewhat interested in violating someone's privacy. Generally because they don't want to feel left out, they lack boundaries and/or they personally like violating boundaries. There's a small percentage that are simply naive.

Why Should You Care About Privacy?

Privacy is a human right like any other right recognized by the UN and other International and Regional treaties.

@markwyner I once heard Cory Doctorow use the analogy (paraphrasing from memory), "There's a difference between privacy and secrecy. What I'm doing in the bathroom stall isn't a secret, but it's private. That's why the door is closed."

@markwyner is pooping nefarious? Is sex with my spouse nefarious? Is not wanting my private personal information stored where who knows who can access it for who knows what nefarious?

@markwyner I always say to those who say 'well, if you've got nothing to hide, you shouldn't worry', "Do you have curtains and non-see-through walls and door locks? If so, why?"

@UkeleleEric I liken it to wearing clothes. It’s not that your body is doing something wrong or will indict you on some nefarious wrongdoings. It’s that you have reserved its viewing to yourself and a select group of others. But you choose who gets to see and when.

@markwyner @UkeleleEric that's an excellent analogy because it also demonstrates it's not all or nothing. People have different tastes in clothing, and there is a significant difference in how much a person chooses to reveal to the public. This is also true for privacy; you get to choose what to share publicly. Just because someone thinks you're sharing too much doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. Just like the conservative will shame the liberal for showing too much skin. Neither person is doing anything wrong; they just have different approaches to privacy.
