🤣Timely!

MKBHD just reviewed a Xiaomi SU7.

Don't hear it from me. Take it from a known Tesla fan.

And in the question 'Are "we" cooked?' who is "we?" More than 99% of US citizens would benefit from cheaper EVs. And the whole planet would be less "cooked" if we accelerate phasing out fossil fuels.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb6H7trzMfI

And in terms of "Doesn't have mind blowing features that US cars don't have..." That's true for the Xiaomi.

But BYD has a car that lets you press a button on the screen that will launch an integrated drone while you are driving. The drone will follow your car.

You're basically an aircraft carrier.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AK7VwXGjGWo

Do you need a drone that will follow your car? Do you need 1,500 horsepower? Do you need 25 speakers in your car?

I'm not sure that the answer to any of these questions is yes.

But if you take these features out, you can sell EVs for under $18K. That's the magic price point for mass adoption.

@mekkaokereke

Xiaomi aren't here yet, but we get lots of other Chinese #EVs. Every year they improve, & are already better featured than legacy brands at the same prices, most have a performance model, & they typically have long warranties (my MG4 has 10yrs).

BYD's new Atto 1/Seagull (4 seat "city" car) starts at ~AUD26.5k (USD17.6k) - your magic 18k number! AND it's well kitted.

I think all legacy manufacturers are in trouble, & will need to change fast to survive.

@mekkaokereke We're not seeing many small, urban run-about type EVs in Australia and I think it's because, so far, they don't comply with our vehicle safety laws which are pretty stringent. That's a pity. I remember when Japanese 4cyl hatchbacks hit the market in the early 80s - * so * popular. I've driven that type of car ever since, but couldn't find an equivalent EV that I could buy here.

@mekkaokereke BYD’s offerings remind me a lot of Shanzhai phones, in that they’re a small enough company to understand their demographic and implement lots of features that seem impractical at first but actually serve a very specific group of people, whereas Xiaomi's stuff is better suited for a general audience

What is truly insane about this is that American auto executives learned NOTHING from Japanese auto manufacturers eating their lunch back in the 1970s.

They just went right back to making all the same mistakes.

@mekkaokereke I've literally never watched a car review video before (I'm so not a car person), but this was fascinating. And now I want a Xiaomi car. 🤣

I also love that he's like "this is made of normal car parts, but it's put together really well". Which is so refreshing in comparison to the relentless "innovation" chatter we hear out of the tech world here.

@mekkaokereke And we might even finally have the infrastructure to charge them:

"In June, a federal court overturned the Trump suspension of Joe Biden’s White House $5 billion infrastructure program crafted to speed EV adoption and cut emissions."

"More than 40 states, including Michigan, have solicited or signed contracts to build new electric car charging stations in rural areas, under served cities."

Bloomberg

EV charging networks plug back into Biden bucks

The $5 billion federal program for charging stations is very much alive, after Trump tried to kill it.

@mekkaokereke It is disgusting that America, the supposed leader in tech, doesn’t have even better vehicles than this at every single car dealer in the country.

It’s really something to live in an empire that is declining. Slow at first, but now rapidly accelerating.

@mekkaokereke Given that the Mean price of new cars in the US just cracked $55k, a quality $18k EV would demolish US Automakers. Deservedly so.

@mekkaokereke My neighbour drives a BYD and she loves it. My MG4 is made by SAIC (another Chinese EV company) and it's such a smooth drive.

I had the American half of my family over for Thanksgiving last week (yes, I know it doesn't make sense for Americans to come to Britain for Thanksgiving 😃 ) and there was a big discussion about whether EVs are "practical". Which really surprised me, cos that's an argument that was settled here years ago.

@davidnjoku

And it's improving.

I saw a BYD Megawatt charger demo with the words "Fast as gas!" above it. The miles of range that you get in 5 minutes of charging, is equivalent to the miles of range that you get from 5 minutes at a gasoline pump.

5 minutes gets you 400 km of range. The car tops out at 600 km of range. At that charging speed, there is effectively no difference.

@mekkaokereke @davidnjoku I agree that fast charging matching the convenience of gas stations is a good thing, especially for drives longer than vehicle range. I do strongly believe that the home charging situation needs to improve for widespread adoption, at least in the US (much healthier for the battery, and grid infrastructure). In my area, I've not seen a single apartment complex that offers the ability to charge EVs at home. Technology Connections has a good video explaining that most home charger installs are overkill, so it definitely should be possible for apartments to provide charging, but you would need to get landlords on board :/

@mekkaokereke Tesla utterly poisoned most markets by focusing on range. Almost nobody needs more than 200 miles, really. That’s more than 3 hours of driving! If you’re on a road trip, the humans need a break too, and you’ll be topped up enough for another 3 hours in less than that break time.

Same thing with the super fast chargers: not necessary, and another attempt at marketing anxiety. It ends up being a talking point for gas-heads to say EVs aren’t ready (as always).

@mekkaokereke @davidnjoku Been doing this math for a while to pitch EVs to 🇺🇸 skeptics. The (few) 800V systems get us to "you're wasting this much time anyway" but it seems like 1500V gets to "it's the same."

1Mw and and leveling off ~400Kw looks like magic. I have questions about longevity but clearly development in 🇨🇳 is moving at lightspeed compared to the 🇺🇸 market where the (IMO) 🇰🇷 cars are leading over anything we're producing domestically. No engineering drive for the future over here 😕

@mekkaokereke @davidnjoku Add in home chargers and there's no comparison at all. Nobody has a home gas pump.

"You never leave home without a full tank" isn't a game changer, it's a different sport.

@mhoye @mekkaokereke @davidnjoku In many places, for more people than is always apparent, there is no place to charge at home. So fast station charging will always be important for a large share of the market.

@mekkaokereke Yeah, Australians have been able to buy Chinese made EVs for a few years now. Not only are they very good cars, very popular, but they've brought down the prices for electric cars overall, which has speeded up uptake.

@anne_twain @mekkaokereke Same situation here in Norway. Chinese EVs have taken 20% market share really quickly by offering cheap cars (MG, Byd, Deepak etc) and really great cars (Polestar, Zeekr, Xpeng, Lotus) that offers a lot of value for money. The question is however how much these cars are subsidized by the Chinese governmenrt.

@mats @anne_twain @mekkaokereke That's great and other countries can subsidize their EVs and hopefully we can get off petrol even quicker.

Old car companies clinging onto old petrol technology will fall by the wayside even if China does not subsidize their EVs because China will have built up all the experience by getting in early.

As a car person I have to say EVs are far more superior, no noise, no terrible smell, low maintenance, cheaper operating cost and much better performance

The only problem is the over inflated price. There is no reason why car makers here have such ridiculous pricing!

Also there is no reason why luxury ICE cars should exist
