This came out of the blue a bit: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/579884/serious-shake-up-of-local-government-imminent 馃 wondering why this Coalition Government thinks they have a mandate to do this. Because they don't. I suspect the Coalition thinks that Regional Gov't has a lot of scientists (who're 'liberal' mostly because they're smart and well-read/travelled) and they push back hard, with compelling reasoning, against this Coalition's actions.

@lightweight #Regional councils are elected officials. They look after local concerns. It is absolutely appalling that central government is doing away with them. It takes us closer to an authoritarian system that is insensitive to concerns about government actions that often favour money making for a select few over quality of life for the majority of people. #nzpol

@lightweight Sounds like if we wait, they'll tell us exactly why: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/580027/minister-shane-jones-says-green-banshees-in-regional-council-are-stifling-growth

To be fair, our regional council, ECan, has been shithouse at enforcing environmental regulations on farmers, mostly because most of the council *is* farmers. I think, due to that poor performance (inmates running the asylum), more women and fewer farmers have elected. A previous Nat'l Gov't replaced elected ECan councillors with 'administrators' when they didn't vote in line with farming interests on irrigation. Suspect disingenuity.
