That particular group server (a.gup.pe) shut down, which was sad, since it was widely used. Have you checked out Bonfire? It a fairly new fediverse software that has a groups feature built in. They're working with open science groups on a variant specifically for scholarly communication;

Apparently it's compatible with ATmosphere apps like BlueSky, as well as fediverse apps like Mastodon.
