@Wtebbens @BjornW I'm a hiker and sometimes a biker and I used to plan my trips on Komoot. That's still posible luckily, I hope they keep it that way, but keep an eye on it.

@BjornW Bending Spoons has a track record of acquiring online startups, laying off the existing staff and continuing the work themselves.

They also acquired Komoot, a bikers app. That's where the biker community coined the verb Komooting. To be "komooted" is a contraction of Komoot and "looting"; OTOH a rather typical dynamic of Venture Capital based business models.

@TheDutchChief @BjornW it may be still useful. Until they manage to get you hooked and dependent. Please also check the #enshittify strategy as articulated by Cory Doctorow. Maybe best to explore ways to track your biking while keeping controç over your data and integrations?

@BjornW Bending Spoons are parasites. Finance bros buying up tech firms, cutting costs, hiking prices on locked in users. Same outfit that destroyed Evernote and Meetup. Absolute textbook end stage #enshittification https://andypiper.co.uk/2024/10/18/meetup-com-is-so-over/

@andypiper @BjornW thank you for reminding me I need to migrate my stuff out of Vimeo, le sigh. As an Italian, this stings 1000x

@elena @andypiper @BjornW It's bleak that there's no obvious alternatives either - especially given how much they already charge.

I wonder what a community owned PeerTube service would lack by comparison. Obvs far fewer editing tools, not as nice interface, transcription/auto-subtitles, am guessing oEmbed support is much lower so harder to embed videos quickly…

@elena @BjornW every time they show up somewhere it makes me sad. But, they forced me to discover @joplinapp to replace Evernote, and it is way better! 💪🏻

@BjornW @marcotietz the AOL one makes less sense than the others - with the apps like Meetup and Vimeo, you have a bunch of heavily-invested users with content and networks locked in / hard to transfer, than you can milk for cash. AOL is puzzling.

@BjornW @Wtebbens I also have Osmand, but if you plan a route in Komoot it will use parts of nice routes from other users. You choose an activity and it shows you the most interesting route, not the shortest or something. like that Maybe osmand has this also, but I can't find it. So I plan with Komoot and then I send the gpx-file to Osmand (and my Garmin watch). Wikiloc also has this way to plan routes.

@elena @BjornW @joplinapp I self-host Joplin server and sync with it to all of my devices. I think there are other cloud options as well (not sure whether Nextcloud is a supported backend)
