If you believed techbros any time in the last quarter century, we’d be ferried around in self-driving cars that never need to be recharged on a Mars colony right now, while occasionally popping a pill to stay 25 forever and getting a foot massage (or other things) from a robot.

Why do people believe the techbros about AI now?

@thomasfuchs Hello dear. Could you please help me promote and share my posts? This would mean a lot to me; perhaps someone will see my story and my children's story thanks to you.🙏

Side view of a small, boxy blue car, labelled "JOHNNYCAB" on a yellow and dark blue stripe, with the front pointed to the right. Inside the car is Arnold Schwarzeneggar leaning forward, and there's a maniken "dressed" in blue as the driver. In the background is brutalist architecture.

Frame grabbed from a scene from the 1990 movie Total Recall.

The people who believe in AI are the exact same humans who believe that god is something other than "everyone else" so them lustily lapping the slop makes a fuckton of disgusting sense

@thomasfuchs There's no real good reason. But I think it is because everyone wants to be ahead of the curve, keep up with the Joneses, one up others. And so they just hop onto the next shiny new thing that has been advertised to them. I heard people talk a lot about what AI can potentially do without actually showing me that AI can do what they say. It's always "if YOU can prompt it properly it will do wonders". Has it done wonders for anyone? Show me that and I will believe it.

@thomasfuchs What happened to the "singularity"? I was supposed to be able to upload *my own* brain to a computer and have it spew deranged nonsense in response to prompts.

The thing about snake oil was the fact that there was actually never any snake oil in the bottle.

@thomasfuchs IMO, mostly because of the ELIZA effect https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA_effect

LLMs _seem_ to be very intelligent, very convincingly, because humans are really bad at determining if things are actually intelligent the moment they start spitting out things that look like language
