@EUCommission Dear Ursula von der Leyen, that was *your boy* Mazón who sat in El Ventorro restaurant for a long, leisurely afternoon in Valencia while the flooding emergency unfolded. 229 people were killed through his negligence. He hasn't resigned or even faced charges.
Responding to the climate crisis requires both competence and responsibility. The EPP represents corruption, coverups, and impunity.
Prove me wrong, through action.
It's a kind initiative, yet misses the underlying dynamic: beyond climate change exacerbating the magnitude of seasonal downpours, the underlying proximate cause is that a lot of housing and roads were built on flood plains.
A major culprit is, then, the corrupt government that emitted housing construction permits for these areas, that have been known to be flood plains for times immemorial and were officially designated as so in modern times.
While immediate relief is appreciated, what is needed is a longer term plan to (1) prosecute the corrupt politicians; (2) prosecute the construction companies that knowingly built on flood plains; and (3) fully fund the relocation of those who live in the impacted buildings.
