Organic Maps
@organicmaps@fosstodon.org  ·  activity timestamp 3 days ago

There are rumors that Apple may introduce ads in its maps: https://www.ghacks.net/2025/10/27/apple-maps-may-display-ads-in-search-results/

Google Maps had ads for a long time: https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3246303

Is it good or bad that businesses have a way to promote themselves on maps?

@organicmaps It's fine for google maps, but OSM should not become dependent on advertising and should remain stoically factual. Reviews would also introduce biased data that's hard to verify.

@organicmaps Bad! If OrganicMaps needs more funding (who doesn't) maybe go the Wikipedia road and just ask for donations from time to time. Seems to be working for Wikipedia, and I am sure there are plenty of people willing to chip in.

Speaking of Gemini, is that an open casket burial memorial for a cat?

Zoom in on an artefact, on an AI created map, that looks like a dead cat in an small open casket placed in the middle of a green park.

@organicmaps You could communicate your point without involving the BS machine, but chose not to. Sad.

@organicmaps
Are there plans to make a fork of Organic Maps for Ads?

@organicmaps
Bad. Unequivocally bad.

It discriminates against those who cannot afford to pay to promote themselves, typically small businesses.

It actively removes choice from the user by presenting a skewed view of what's available.

Ads destroy *everything* they touch. They are a parasite that needs to be stamped out.

I block ads at every opportunity, and I *buy* the Android apps I truly use (where the dev provides an ad-free version). I *donate* money to #FOSS projects I use (finances permitting).

It might be good for the businesses, but it's not good for the user. As soon as someone is paying for information being put in front of me, I can not trust the information anymore.

@organicmaps Surely you mean “Apple may introduce more ads into Maps”? For what else is the “Guides we love” nonsense that you can’t remove if not advertising? Apple Maps has been a Gmaps wannabe for a long time, it’s just not as good at it.

@organicmaps ads have a negative impact on UX, but they can be an helpful source to monetize

@organicmaps I think it's fine to be able to find businesses, but I'm not fond of companies trying to monopolise my attention. If I were, I'd neither be on Mastodon, nor be using Organic Maps

@organicmaps Maybe a desperate attempt to keep business listings up to date? While I find Apple Maps excellent for turn-by-turn navigation with cars, business listings in many areas, at least in Europe, are practically useless, often years out of date.

@ujay68 the same situation is with OpenStreetMap.org , right? @everydoor tries to solve it, but in our opinion, only easy-to-use, mass popular map apps like OM can really promote OpenStreetMap.org and increase the number of active contributors/actuality of POIs/map data.

@organicmaps @everydoor True. Easy and accessible edit functions like in OM certainly help. Hopefully. I’ve always shied away from full-featured OSM editor tools, TBH, but I started contributing with OM.

@organicmaps it's ok to pay someone to add you on open street map. It's not OK to visually prioritise only amenities who paid. GMaps does it to a point where it actually interferes with it being used as a MAP

@mcbaumwolle @organicmaps this clearly came out of a slop machine, I don't care which one. This marks the end of my (small-scale) financial support for the project :(

@organicmaps if a map has adds, ist useless for me. Maps need to be discrimination free.
