There was a window of time starting about 2005 and ending about 2025 when it was easy for an average person to create and distribute a genuine image or video, but difficult for an average person to create a fake image or video that stood up to scrutiny.

That was the window of time that citizen journalism worked.

It has closed.

@evan And the problem is not just the fake videos, it's that real videos can now be dismissed as fake. I used to say that however fanatical their followers, no politician could survive revelation of clear video footage of them committing certain awful crimes. That's no longer true.

@evan @katzentratschen How is this an issue for citizen journalism? What does citizen journalism report about that necessarily needs imagery?

Isn't fake imagery really more of a problem for underfunded mainstream media journalists?

@evan Anything created by AI needs to have a tag proclaiming so in the metadata. Should be law.

Don't think "If this guy tries to cheat me, how is he going to do this?", think "This guy is trying to cheat me. How exactly is he doing this?"

@evan Would C2PA.org change this? Or is it too late? (An author/editor of RFC9334).

@evan I've yet to see that "professional journalists" aren't getting caught up in the same mess of fake news. Especially since because of the "convenience" of this time frame many started to just pull their news stories off of social media...

@evan It’s definitely closed now, but I’d argue that citizen journalism never really “worked” even during that short time period. Occasionally it did, and those are the rare occasions we remember, but the vast majority of citizen “reports” were still inaccurate, lacked important context, or were misinformation. We just fell for them because they “felt” authentic.

Lobby your lawmakers for compulsory labeling of content.

Make it a criminal offence to create an AI reproduction without appropriate labeling.

Now...

You want me to solve a harder problem?

You can no longer trust by default an image or video shared on the Internet by an unverified source. *Especially* if it confirms your existing beliefs.

You have to check the provenance and the source. If you're not sure that the image or video came from a trusted source, don't share it and don't react to it. Go see if your trusted sources are talking about the topic.

@evan

and this is why the current WH/GOP is doing its best to destroy or subvert all verified sources. so we'll never know for anything what's real.
