Last time we had a big bubble burst (2008, the subprime crisis), the investment dollars piled into commodities like grain futures that were perceived as "safe". Result: 1-2 years later crop prices soared—a major contributory factor if not THE trigger for the Arab Spring in 2011 and the Syrian and Libyan civil wars.

This time I expect they'll try and boost fossil fuel assets (to support the AI data centres that are going bust, natch). Cynical, moi?

@cstross

Here's an even worse scenario.

The "#AI" companies are saved by financial support from the Department Of War, and are repurposed into propaganda generators in the war to annex #Canada and #Greenland.

Notice that #PeteHoekstra has already been pushing the line on Canadian telly that #Canada is an "anti-American" aggressor that started this.

And if the emergency meeting is about pulling staff from the Indo-Pacific closer to home …

@cstross The other political shockwave the subprime crisis caused was a whole lot of rural and small town people lost their properties. Their mantra then was 'But we did everything right'. That resentment led directly to the Tea Party founding that eventually morphed into MAGA. What domestic political fallout will the AI crash bring?

@cstross A couple of the AI firms are chattering about pivots to using their datacenters for cryptocurrency (again; some of them pivoted into AI from that) and I’m not sure if that is better or worse than fossil fuels

@cstross If by "cynical" you mean "learned from the past, recognize the patterns, and recognize likely outcomes," yes.

@cstross That investors are behaving irrationally may be the first true thing Altman has said in very long time 🤣

@munin No: but you're going to see lobbyists trying to make Trump ban new wind turbines and solar panels.

@cstross @munin They're already organizing for it. A lobbyist of my acquaintance back home asked me if I was interested in doing IT for a contract to do this.
