I smile each time I turn on my laptop.

To each, their own, obviously, but, for me, GNOME is a gorgeous desktop.

@neil Entirely agreed. Gnome gives me such a smooth, distraction-free experience that using it in general feels pretty pleasant.

@neil certainly got some prettiness to it. I'm more of a minimalist, so I have fluxbox configured to be barely noticeable—no window-chrome on windows (I can move/resize with Logo+LMB and Logo+RMB dragging or keyboard shortcuts), my dock/slit and my taskbar both auto-hide, no desktop-icon program running, and most applications run full-screen. ☺

I love how X accommodates us both while applications don't care either way

@neil This toot made me look at screenshots of GNOME again after many years and I found out to my elated surprise that in many ways I've long since been modifying my KDE desktop to look very close to how GNOME looks nowadays.

Which really is just evidence of both the amazing customisability of @kde and the gorgeous design langage of @gnome. Headpats to both of them, people should be praising their good work instead of senselessly fighting about which one is ‘better’. blobcatnomblobcat

@neil I think the best bit about Linux isn't Gnome or KDE or XFCE. It's about finding what you like. If you like the stock desktop that's great, but if you like to spend hours cobbling together bits and pieces until it's uniquely yours, you can do that.

@neil Out of interest, what laptop do you have that runs Linux (without major issues, I presume)? I'm in the market for one, but am a hardware design snob...

To each their own, but I prefer the functionality of the KDE system.

@neil when it switches to dark mode at 7, mine becomes this:
A darkened picture of a sea otter, with the text “Otter Things” superimposed, in the style of the TV show, Stranger Things.

@neil Thanks - you're not the first to recommend the Yoga, but I hate the nipple! If only the recent Surface Laptops didn't require so much kernel patch malarkey to run everything. Great hardware, terrible consumer OS.
