No, New Zealand does not need nuclear power.

We have plenty of cheap, safe, renewable energy sources at the ready. Chief among them offshore wind power which this muppet is pushing away in favour of seabed mining.

Also, awful to see him ramping up the climate denial, racism, and xenophobic discourse.
They might smell election time coming.

@pezmico What a brilliant idea! We could spend the entire annual GDP of New Zealand to maybe have our first nuclear power plant in 25 years! That should fix the energy crisis once and for all. 🤷‍♂️

Shane Jones ... what a blowhard.

@pezmico As soon as you do the financials it fails miserably. Then there's the interminable amount of time it takes to build and commission a nuke plant...we could add enough solar, wind, and battery storage to produce 10X the output in that same period.

Shane Jones arrived wearing a rather gay powder puff blue suit, surely an unspoken symbol of his ongoing solidarity with rainbow people.

The atmosphere in the audience gave off a tangy mix of Grecian 2000 masking unjustified disappointment, tinged with the lightly burnt odour of unfulfilled dreams.

While there was none of that woke masking nonsense and only a single cooker wore a Maga hat, the average IQ in the room could easily be defined by the fact that these people have a shared belief that Shane Jones is some sort of gifted thinker.

@pezmico I am old enough to remember the (I think) Royal Comission on this in the 70s. I wasn't very political back then but one of my lecturers was involved. Anyway, they came back hands down that it was too expensive because you really can't build a small reactor so we'd have to spend lots building one way too big that we didn't need, and there’s no way to dispose of the waste.

There's still no way to dispose of the waste and, despite claims that it is 'nearly there', there's still no working small reactor. I expect that isn’t quite accurate cos there must be small ones on submarines. However, those have very different cost and operating constraints to a power station.

@pezmico Plus if you build a centralised power station way too big and get dependent on having that much power you need to build a second one to cover supply when the first one is down for maintenance. Any nuclear power station in a country as small as New Zealand costs double.
