Legitimately asking and not trying to be incendiary here... But if things like the Fediverse still have to comply with regulations that centralized platforms have to, what exactly is the protection that decentralized social media exactly offers?

Cuz like, just because my server is in, I dunno, Norway, if I'm serving users in the US, I'm still going to have to comply by US laws right?

I get the idea of the whole, "They can't take down Mastodon! Anyone can host the a Mastodon server" thing. But how exactly does that matter if the individual who has to host these things could be incuring $10,000 a day fines because someone popped in from Mississippi if someone decided to raise a fuss about it?

Because then sure, Mastodon continues existing, but people couldn't host servers safely anyways. So like, what exactly makes decentralization better outside of it not being corporately controlled?

(And honestly, with how much Mastodon in particular has sucked the dicks of Facebook, Meta, and Threads, it's hard to argue for it in particular not really making good choices to protect users.

Though I know Mastodon isn't the end all be all of the Fediverse.

I mean, I'm sticking around here either way because I love the people here and have amazing times checkin in with folks, but it still has me wondering a lil.

Cuz right now all I got is the ability to "move to different accounts" but for the majority of that not even take any of my posts or anything with me just the same as centralized social media. And so like, I legit feel like I need someone to explain it to me a lil.
