While I was on the fediverse in 2016 (Hubzilla) it was actually @ricmac who told me about Mastodon in 2017. Just found my first posts in the Wayback Machine.

@jackyan thanks for the reminder! Alas, that nonprofit group blog, AltPlatform, didn't last long. But it did make me check out the open web initiatives of the time, like Mastodon and #IndieWeb. @jackyan @pkboi Yes, and that was part of the reason why it took me a few goes before I started to use Mastodon regularly. It took a while for the tech community to come in and settle. I think early in 2017 I signed up to a now defunct instance, mastodon.technology. But I switched to mastodon.social later that year.
@ricmac @pkboi I can’t remember where I started but I know I was at Mastodon.social by June 2017 (the Wayback Machine’s first is July 2017 and those posts are marked ‘1 month ago’). I remember selecting servers prior to Mastodon so I wonder if that was Hubzilla or something else on the fediverse. It wasn’t a big thing then so I will have some pre-Mastodon dormant accounts lying about somewhere …
