This is coconuts. I was using PirateShip, an app for buying and managing mailing labels. When I entered the window for printing a label, a dialog box popped up asking me if I wanted the document summarized by AI. The document, to be clear, was a mailing label that I was in the process of printing.

@annaleen A summary of a mailing address? Now I’m curious as to what that would look like…

Maybe this is the breakthrough we’ve been waiting for!?! Shortened snail-mail addresses! It could save us thousands of keystrokes every day!

Yeah, no…

@annaleen I had exactly that experience yesterday signing a contract amendment using DocuSign. (Said no, of course.)

Not sure whether the AI garbage is a deliberate "improvement" by DocuSign, or pushed by one of their upstream suppliers, but as DocuSign processes PDFs …

@cstross @annaleen If you're sued and use a "The AI did it!" defense, why shouldn't the court require evidence that the software you bought is actually intelligent?

This will be an interesting attack surface: have signing service AI summarize a contract leaving out key provisions which change major implications. Plausible deniability and direct impact.

@osma @cstross @annaleen I worked for an esign provider (not DocuSign) in 2023 when *everything* was getting Summarize-with-AI as a feature. An internal hackathon horked up exactly this feature: summarize this long legal doc for you before signing.

I don't think we ever released it, the internal pushback was too strong, and Legal wasn't convinced the disclaimer-text on the summary was enough legal cover. Every esign provider has thought this thought, only the weak let it into production.

@annaleen Yeah, my first experience with this was when opening a scanned building blueprint. Asking whether I want it summarized. Not telling me where it would send it, and under what legal agreement.

So, apparently Adobe has been hard at work, strewing AI buttons left, right, center, the bottom, and the top, hoping against hope that *someone* will accidentally click them. The last one I found (after disabling everything else and switching the UI back to classic) was in the print dialogue!

@annaleen I'm interested what the actual incentive for them to do this is. Are they just trying to seem up-to-date or are they using it to train new LLM models or something?

I don't think this is PirateShip's fault. They are using Adobe Acrobat to format their labels, and it would appear that Adobe got their AI bloatware to blorp up a dialog box in PirateShip's app.

@annaleen PS is just serving up a PDF here - most browsers now have some kind of built-in PDF viewer, or if you have any PDF viewer software installed, it's also likely applied its extension to installed browsers, to handle any PDFs you view on the web.

So you may be able to avoid this if you uninstall Adobe Acrobat from your computer.

/If/ however you definitely don't have it installed or preinstalled on your machine, something spooky is happening! Or maybe browsers have it preinstalled 🤔

@annaleen Are they using Acrobat or is it just that these are PDFs and you have Acrobat installed that's taken over control of displaying PDF documents? In the latter case, uninstalling Acrobat should fix it.

I just ran straight into the pdf issue earlier today, trying for a simple task of 'basic pdf reader'.

Like, I have not been a fan of Adobe for decades but at least Reader used to be no fuss no muss.

And now ...Lord.

And it started because the windows/word built in one is, at best, semi functional now, because it tries to OCR then AI-geb everything, and does a worse and slower job than oce tech from 2010 (literally).

@annaleen Acrobat is just vicious with how hard it pushes AI now, I hate it. Adobe, please don't send random PDFs to your cloud, please don't try to summarize legal documents (!), please just read the PDF like a PDF reader should!
