Y'all think the "slavery's not so bad" stylings are aberrant.

Oh my sweet summer child, slavery is the entire and total wet dream of these ghouls.

That's your google, that's your microsoft, that's your OpenAI, that's every late stage extractive capitalist.

100% this. I would bet good money that the US will bring back(1) some form(s) of slavery. This has been the dream of these men since the start. I am wiling to be that women will lose the vote and a whole lot else, too.

(1) Not counting prison slavery that is legal and currently practiced

I'm not sure I agree.

I think the Gilded Age of the 1890s, once Jim Crow was fully in place, is the goal.

Why have the responsibility of owning the enslaved when you can source, as needed, from a huge pool of desperate people with no rights? It is the ultimate subcontractor bondage model.

@GeePawHill One possible difference – I’ve the impression that US chattel slave owners generally *liked* exerting direct power over other people’s bodies. In any case, the slaves were up close and personal, even for those who never visited the feels.

Whereas my sense is that our klepts find humanness – bodies that are more than unit-of-work-providers – distasteful. That’s a big part of the appeal of LLMs.
