Remember when the fedi got upset over a shared a list of fedi servers that Meta apparently crawled for AI, without any actual proof?

Also, remember how Meta launched Threads, an ActivityPub service?

Despite my own criticisms regarding Meta, let's be real.

They don't need to crawl the fedi for training data, they kinda run Facebook and Instagram which provides much more data.

Let's not be so quick to grab our pitchforks without legitimate evidence.

@dansup - I for one appreciate that with being on Mastodon & Friendica instances that federate with Threads, I am able to see posts from some journalists & peeps of interest that simply aren't otherwise going to join Mastodon, without having to install a truly invasive Meta app, or create a Threads account. And given ActivityPub's default "publicness", AI crawlers are capable of sucking up most of our posts if they are ever sent in our direction, whether federated with Threads or not.

@dansup yeah, i think the evidence is quite weak here. it wouldn't surprise me if they were doing it, but that doesn't mean that they are doing it.

@dansup
Ok that’s why I phrased it as a question. Some of your posts do sound that way, but perhaps I missed the broader context.

@dansup scraping for data without users' authorization is wrong, doesn't matter the volume.

Just because they steal more on another venue it does not change the wrongness of doing that here.

FWIW.

@faraiwe i agree, but we haven't seen any proof that they have scraped our data.

We do federate to threads (not all, but some), and I think this is where the confusion stems from.

@dansup The point is, your statement feels as if an apology for a truly evil empire.

Let's not. Even if hypotheticals. What they do is wrong-wrong-wrong, and normalizing it, even remotely close, is how we got to nazi fascism erasure of democracy.

The #fediverse (excludes threads and bluesky which are centralized, corporate owned walled gardens) should be a haven from that.

All caveats, NGGYUNGLYD, AYBABTU, etc.

@faraiwe democracy dies in darkness, the point of my post was that we jumped to that conclusion without any verifiable proof, a dangerous precedent that has nothing to do with Meta and more to do with us.

@dansup Given the absolutely evil track record of Meta, let's assume they are evil, shall we?

Because they have done NOTHING that has ever been good.

Ditto for caveats.

@dansup@mastodon.social Are you able to stop having extremely shit takes or is this what you do for a living? Yes, all those platforms provide much more training data, but let's be real, why would they use only those services training data when they can also crawl fedi and get even more data? That's what they do. Also it serves as a way for them to make a statement, because if they crawl us they're basically stating that even if we're not on Meta Platforms, they're still going to use our data. I don't know if they pay you to have shit takes at this point honestly. I think I recall a few other shit takes like this from you about meta.

I would assume that Meta crawls everything by default and would be surprised if they made an exception for the fediverse.

@tipjip That is a fair assumption, but from what I've heard from their team, they have safeguards and legal to ensure compliance.

And again, they don't need the fediverses data, they kinda have the two biggest social networks

@dansup @tipjip legal compliance? It has been published that Zucky himself authorized training on libgen, the at time biggest pirate library. Meta doesn't care about law, they won't care of any of our ToS

Putting aside the question of whether or not they need data from the fediverse, if you have any trust in Meta’s “safeguards” or “legal compliance” practices, I’ve got some NFTs of the Brooklyn Bridge you might be interested in.

I recommend reading Sarah Wynn-Williams’ Serious People.

@kkarhan I agree, but we should be more cognizant of the truth and facts across this ecosystem.

It's really easy to start a rumor that has not a single speck of truth.
