Dear Mastodon commenters:

When someone describes a systemic problem with a technology in society, you dickheads have an awful habit of Kramering into the mentions proposing to solve the problem with some lump of open source with an interface bad enough it's a list of reasons to become a terrorist.

Apart from how nobody fucking asked, you are also being too obnoxiously self-centred to realise that INDIVIDUAL SOLUTIONS DON'T SOLVE SYSTEMIC PROBLEMS that are not a matter of people not being enlightened to the existence of a particular lump of FOSS that isn't going to work for that user in that situation anyway.

Your reasons for thinking this is in any way appropriate behaviour trace directly back to the libertarian origins of open source and the Californian ideology as outlined as far back as the 1990s. Many of you are absolutely not libertarians and you *still pull this shit*, and that's where you got it from.

This is a perennial fucking pattern. I realise that posts like this reach everyone except the fuckheads who really need to read them, but to sum it up:

NOBODY ASKED FOR YOUR SOFTWARE REC FOR THIS SYSTEMIC PROBLEM.

TRY SHUTTING THE FUCK UP AND NOT ACTING LIKE A FATUOUS BOZO.

Feel free to link back here when someone does this to one of your posts.

HUNDREDS of drive-by replies from FOSS people, it was insane. My instance admins had to jump in and block entire servers.

I very much understand "some people need to run Windows", I'm sorry you were the center of such a firestorm. You're obviously not wrong in your statement.

@davidgerard

I offer to double down on FOSS vs systemic problems. In many cases FOSS is a systemic problem. So much FOSS is undermined by governance and funding issues, precisely because it is Free.

If an end user has requirements that extend beyond "free" or "open source", then FOSS can be a systemic issue in and out itself. You're being asked to accept new trade-offs, and they aren't always the right ones. And there may be no resolution to those trade-offs. Your FOSS product may not have a support plan, even though you need one

Paid for software has systemic issues.
FOSS has has systemic issues.

There are no easy answers here.

@davidgerard I mean sure. Valid. But understand that systemic problems cannot be solved in a system that always values profitability over privacy, stability, and versatility. A lot of us are not "libertarians" by choice, but because the system only allows that option, for the time being.

@davidgerard I don't make unsolicited software recs, but I can see why people think its helping. They can see that big software is a powerful tool of oppression, and that it won't go away until people stop using it. Telling someone about an alternative on social media is a concrete, though ineffective (often counterproductive) action someone can take towards change. So my question is, what can people do instead? How can your average FOSS nerd channel their enthusiasm towards meaningful action?

The people being dicks are being my problem, and my solution is, per the post, for them to stop.

I am not in fact required to come up with something better for them to do, because I already did, in the post.

The post is notifying them that they are not being helpful, they're being dicks.

@davidgerard what about supporting broader education initiatives, removing the unsolicited part of the equation? There are a lot of people out there who *want* to learn to use alternative software, but there are so many hurdles. I have a computer science degree and it took me ages to figure out a good alternative to Discord and help my friends set it up. What if we had inclusive community computing groups that could offer classes and tutoring to help willing people broaden their horizons?

@davidgerard Genuinely asking: how do we solve systemic issues with technology? And how can we have productive discourse around these issues?

Example: Windows gets worse over time, and data collection is worse than ever in the OS. This is a systemic privacy issue, since most of the world uses Windows, and migrating to a different OS would be difficult for both home users and enterprises/governments. How do we solve this? And what kind of discourse should we have for such issues?

Sometimes the best way to resolve a systemic problem is to choose having a different problem.

Isn't this why we moved here? We didn't fix the problem. We chose to have a different one.

@davidgerard People take agency where they can when confronted with systemic issues. You are posting on Mastodon from a private invitation only server, and not Twitter. This is directly a typical FOSS geek solution to the systemic problem of corporate social media.

People are fleeing US and surveillance capitalism services. This is a trend: seeking alternatives. Some are easier than others. Enough momentum and it can influence the system. What context of replies do you seek?

Yeah, the latent libertarian notions in open source culture are severely under-critiqued. It's cousin to the ideological strain the birthed all these tech cultist silicon valley dipshits.

I want municipal data centers that we all pay taxes for and are able to use for services we develop that benefit our community and which provide us the means to create large scale alternatives to private tech monopolies. I don't want libertarian tech, give me democratic community tech.

yes, of course building most sorts of infrastructure is a community project, we have to come together and pool a large amount of labor in order to build it, we also have to maintain it over time with even more money and labor

software isn't like that, world-altering amounts of software can come from a single unremarkable unsupported neet

i don't wanna do economics on main but clearly we can't treat software as infrastructure

I am tired of hearing FOSS recommendations that turn out to be impractical duds, for many reasons some/most of which you covered. I use windows/Mac and find those systems to work just fine for my needs.

But opposite of this, it has been an overall positive journey learning about alternatives. I wouldn’t be here on mastodon or the Fediverse if I had shut out differing views of tech, and I’m still open to switching to Linux (waiting for a RC).

@davidgerard it's a good point but I think would be a lot clearer if you had bolded the key points instead of using all capital letters. It's actually quite simple to do this on vanilla Mastodon, just edit the database record and then run a script to federate out your edited posts. You may need to adjust your queue sizes if you do this, and of course it affects your backup strategy as well. There are only a few other complexities to keep in mind ... (1/275)

Ugh I haven't the Round Tuits to self host; I should just finally give in and move over to infosec.exchange or a local one and set up a recurring contribution to that so I don't get bit by the side effects of staying on m.s.

@davidgerard Also: "Just self-host all of the 400 different services you use"

Also also, I blocked several dozen people on here when the Unity thing happened, because they thought it was funny and that anyone using Unity deserved it. When I think of FOSS, I think of this kind of attitude.

Email self-hosting and tooling vs systemic issues

@davidgerard @midnightspire Honestly the email server we run on-premise hasn't had any such problems sending to Gmail users, even though I've been too lazy to set up DKIM and can't remember if I set up DMARC (I did set up SPF since that seemed sane and easy). Can I be bothered to set up a server for my personal use though? Nope

Actual biggest deliverability problem I've run into is very much in line with your point about problems being systemic rather than solveable by tools: Microsoft's been a pain, but not usually getting *to* their servers, rather that their servers keep ending up on realtime blocklists because they do such a bad job that spam operations routinely end up spewing out from their endpoints! So Microsoft-using corporate clients will email us and get a bounce, which is ugly. And meanwhile running an email server *without* using realtime blocklists is a misery of spam...

(In before someone chimes in: yeah I made an exception such that Microsoft's email endpoints are never blocked, which has "solved" this problem. Now a bit more spam slips through. It's a societal problem, can kinda *mitigate* it through tooling but can't fix it.)

Email is definitely the best example for self-hosting not being the solution if we can't even trust that concept to handle crucial communication infrastructure.

Granted I personally know pretty much all pitfalls after years of fighting with sending emails from forum software as well as several attempts at self-hosting my full email stack and trying to filter out spam more efficiently but I would never advice anyone of my friends or family to self-host it... (even though my first instinct is to say "Of course you can do it!" but that's based on over a decade of experience in that space, not on the fact that it's realistic for everyone to just do it without proper education)

In my opinion what we really need to solve those problems is to self-organize and build groups of people where we can trust each other to offer the services we cannot handle ourselves but can handle as a group. And we need concepts on how to build and manage such groups which are compatible with the modern digital age and not hindered by the old analog legal frameworks that exists.

@davidgerard this afflicts commercial software sale folks as well - although I suspect the motivation is different - the result is the same.

What was the question? The answer is YES! Our $PRODUCT can outperform other solutions in this space by a factor of five!

@davidgerard This problem runs wider than FOSS, IMO, though that's a prime example. The more general form is "people of a certain mindset think the solution to every problem is a tool". Thus one ends up with arcane over-complex toolchains that create huge onboarding issues in order to deal with things like "probably people x and y need to talk sometimes".
