Spotify Publishes AI-Generated Songs From Dead Artists Without Permission

Spotify is publishing new, AI-generated songs on the official pages of artists who died years ago without the permission of their estates or record labels.

According to his official Spotify page, Blaze Foley, a country music singer-songwriter who was murdered in 1989, released a new song called “Together” last week. The song, which features a male country singer, piano, and an electric guitar, vaguely sounds like a new, slow country song. The Spotify page for the song also features an image of an AI-generated image of a man who looks nothing like Foley singing into a microphone.

Craig McDonald, the owner of Lost Art Records, the label that distributes all of Foley’s music and manages his Spotify page, told me that any Foley fan would instantly realize “Together” is not one of his songs.

“I can clearly tell you that this song is not Blaze, not anywhere near Blaze’s style, at all,” he told me on a call. “It’s kind of an AI schlock bot, if you will. It has nothing to do with the Blaze you know, that whole posting has the authenticity of an algorithm.”

frankly I think CEOs of "ai" companies should be at least fined if not arrested, and prevented from operating anymore, those companies should be shut down, and so-called "ai" should be tightly restricted except for specific use cases that are proven to work properly...

but in the meantime because no government organization seems to give a fuck about doing anything about these problems -- and indeed many of them are actively in cahoots with villainous tech wankstains -- it once again falls to people to engage in the rather pathetic practice of voting with their wallets and no longer giving money to abhorrent services that operate amorally

it feels utterly fucking sad to me that the best we can do is gesture vaguely at alternatives that don't engage in fucking awful practices (FOR NOW), and elected officials cannot be trusted to create and enforce regulation that actually matters and would make a difference; like with climate shit, the onus is put on individuals to do stuff, which frankly doesn't fucking work but at least it's better than doing nothing at all

i am tired of being disgusted every day by the free rein that's given to the wealthy to do whatever the fuck they want, while governments watch meekly with their hands behind their backs, this is a fucking ridiculous state of affairs

i would enjoy it if governments could, for once, just one time, flex their muscles to wholeheartedly serve the people on behalf of whom they were elected to govern, rather than the interests of money money money
