The researchers were clear that adoption of AI and the accelerated server technologies that power it has been the primary force causing electricity demand from data centers to skyrocket after remaining stagnant for over a decade. Between 2024 and 2028, the share of US electricity going to data centers may triple, from its current 4.4% to 12%.

This happens again and again. Efficiency improvements promise a green sustainable future, but end up delivering just more economic growth, equating more ecological destruction.

The more efficient something is, the cheaper it becomes, the more it will be used, with less care and consideration.

Data centers use space and energy more efficiently? We now use software for everything and never throw away any data, however useless.

Car engines become more efficient? We'll make cars faster and bigger, and travel more.

Batteries become small and cheap? There are now chips in every throwaway doodad.

Jevons paradox is not dead.
