The other day a taxi driver asked where I was from and I said I was Canadian but lived in #malaga He asked what I liked most about the city and I said it was hard to choose just one thing, but if I had to choose, it would be that everyone who arrives at my local bakery greets everyone else in line.

He said: once you’ve had a civil war, you learn that it’s harder to kill people you say hello to every day.

I do wonder if that small change of simply politely greeting people you don’t know on a regular basis might make the world a better place. #malaga

@Remittancegirl “Hello” is one of the reasons why I’ve been running a social enterprise as a side business that promotes community events and encourages people to interact in the public square for 2 decades.

When 47 was reelected, I thought of what I could do and concluded I needed to stay dedicated to doing work that encourages “hello.”

In addition to promotional services, I help produce the events too. As someone doing the work to bring people together, I need to report that at least around me, the type of people who produce local festivals and celebrations are near their breaking point.

This type of work is largely nonprofit and volunteer work. Many of them are small business owners for whom the pandemic economy never left. We’ve been losing people at an unsustainable rate and the pipeline that renews our ranks vaporized in 2022. It’s bad.

People want to do something besides protesting? Volunteer to help produce community events like local festivals and celebrations. Create small culture.
