Make no mistake, I really love what Ghost is doing with publishing. I’m a happy customer, and intend to stay there for the time being. But Ghost’s current ActivityPub offering is ultimately very limited, even when compared to Mastodon.

I think Bonfire could provide the building blocks to make something similar to Ghost, but with a far more robust amount of features under the hood.

@deadsuperhero

Any thoughts on the Streams repository offering?

@baslow I have mixed opinions. As with most projects from this family tree: amazing underlying technologies, kind of rough UI and UX design concepts, questionable long-term viability. Friendica and Hubzilla have relatively stable communities with users, admins, and devs, but there’s a number of projects like Osada and Zap that just kind of got sunset out of the blue.

@deadsuperhero absolutely agree! Very excited to try it out myself. My community was curious about it, and it's very difficult to fully explain. I'm hoping if I can get it set up, with help, that I can do some videos showcasing it and learning myself. I think it has massive potential for small communities as well. I don't think Bonfire is the last evolution. That's our unique stepping stone. Things like that and #Surf .

@ozoned The way I understand Bonfire, it’s almost like a framework for building different Fediverse apps using modular pieces. It can almost be understood as being like Ruby on Rails, but for Fediverse applications that can all be wildly different.

Not a perfect analogy, but their “Apps” are almost like distributions built on top of the core framework. There’s a lot of cool things that could be built with this.

@deadsuperhero Yeah, I was hoping Ghost would develop a full micro-blogging tool in addition to its regular blog/newsletter, but now I'm not sure it's going to happen. Which is sad.

And yes, I've been testing Bonfire on their demo instance and it's quite impressive. I hope to be able to have an actual account soon.

@DavidBHimself I think what Ghost has accomplished so far is extremely good. My thinking is that it probably takes a decent amount of time to incorporate entirely new features, and that they may still be figuring out what pieces fit with their system.
