Finance, bookkeeping, tax: possibly the least sexy areas of activism ever. Yet every legal collective has to do them. How many collectives never form because the barrier was too high? How much dynamism is smothered by the conservativism of compliance?

Big companies just outsource all of this: the smaller and less profitable, the more you're affected. (I.e. it's regressive)

@douginamug Yup! I'm in the middle of starting a US not for profit now and it's a ton of work. A lot of which I think is important and necessary, like demonstrating that we're truly not using the entity for self benefit. But it could be way easier, especially with supportive tooling.

@williampietri @douginamug
Have y'all found any supportive tooling that works for you?

@bhaugen None. I leaned on a network of friends plus paying a lawyer and an accountant. I think good tooling would be possible, but you'd need a different theory of product creation than is dominant in either the for-profit or open-source spaces.

I heard the #g0v movement in #taiwan lead to massive improvement in tax declarations, etc. Can anyone confirm that?

@diegodlh @douginamug That's a UX improvement project raised by a civil UX designer in cooperation with the tax bureau since 2017, they use design thinking methodology and host many workshops with civil volunteers to help public servants learn how to work with the community and do modern design/development, which has massively improved the personal tax procedure. @diegodlh @douginamug The result is that with my personal number and password, I can do my tax declaration in like 5 mins on a mobile phone or any device with a modern browser. They had pre-calculated most of the numbers, and I just need to check and pay with credit card.

@diegodlh @douginamug However, the UX projects had been cut in this February by our newest congress, which said all of these expenses were corruption and waste. Many people easily believed. Sounds familiar, right?
DOGE!
