On 29 June 1922 Michael Collins sent a telegram to Winston Churchill begging for more military aid to fight the IRA, complaining he was promised 'two hundred rounds of high explosives' from the British to use against the anti-Treaty Irish Republican Army. 1/

We were promised two hundred rounds of high explosive at two AM this morning but they were not available. This ammunition was again promised for five thirty and again not available. The promise was renewed for eight thirty with like result. The effect of this is to create great lack of confidence on our side amounting to grave suspicion. Essential that action be taken immediately otherwise situation will become impossible."
