Did you know that in the EU, minors cannot be targeted by online ads? 🚫

Under the Digital Services Act, targeted advertising is NOT allowed for minors.

This Act is supported by a team of scientists from the European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency.

@EUCommission
In Ireland, Apple and Google have infiltrated primary and secondary schools with their products, iPads, Chromebooks, etc. and accounts in the students' names, etc. so they are well versed in using the tools that will bombard them with all that advertising when the time is right.

@EUCommission Could you do this for everyone though? If you prohibit targeted advertising, there will be much less unfair practices and data leaks, right?
Topic targeting is sufficient enough - if a person is on a site about cats, see cats related ads....

@EUCommission I mean, if it's _not allowed..._ 🙄

Unless and until you implement ruthless, relentless enforcement, minors in the EU _absolutely_ can be, and will be targeted by online ads.

@EUCommission a step forward I guess if it's actually enforced but a full ban on targeted ads for everyone would have been the better move

The EU is an indepenndant legislature so why are people pandering to the predominantly US based tech and ad industry who work against our interests?

@EUCommission Except they prolly still do it because they spy on people that are not registered too, so there's no way for them to know if you are a minor. Enforce the law by not be allowing companies to spy on unregistered users. #privacy

@EUCommission In that case, I would like to be treated as a minor ;)
But realistically, the odds of getting away with violations of this rule, is probably pretty good :(

@EUCommission
Not allowed != Cannot

I'm pretty sure big tech does exactly this and we're just to stupid/lazy/ignorant to acknowledge it.

@EUCommission so I guess the minors need to be tracked thoroughly first, in order to determine their age and figure out when they become of age?
