I'm shopping for an #Android phone now that I figured out how to make Talkback understand 1 finger swipes like Apple does. I have an old Pixel 4A from someone else but I am fully locked outa that phone because of Factory Reset Protection (FRP), which is hugely annoying. What Android phones do you all use with the least manufacturer bloat?
@WeirdWriter i love my fairphone. Are they available where you are ?
What are you learning right now? I haven't had much time for self-study recently, but I'd love to know what y'all are exploring. Doesn't have to be tech, just whatever is sparking your curiosity!
@mttaggart Japanese, and Guitar. I like to find hobbies that are not at the computer.
What is making you stay in tech in this age of slop?

@rhelune My biggest struggle in exiting: Convincing employees that I'd be happy taking on another job...
That said if a contract comes through (an upgrade to a great one I already had) I should be able to make enough without needing to vibecode. And my appropriate response to this poll will shift from "I am plotting my exit strategy" to "I haven't been pushed against the wall yet".
OpenSSH 10.6 has just been released.
This release contains fixes for a few security problems, some new features - including support for a post-quantum signature scheme, and the usual sprinkling of bugfixes
If I don't keep my car roadworthy and crash into yours, it hasn't gone "rogue", it's my negligence and I'm responsible. If my dog attacks you, I am liable. There are no rogue AIs, just negligent AI companies. Prosecute them.

Oil inventories in western countries have been exhausted as a result of the Iran war, the boss of the world’s largest independent oil trader said, warning that fuel markets are likely to remain tight going into winter.
In software development, we "solved" being helpful.
It's not what another human said would be helpful, heavens no. ACTUALLY, it's the absolute best & cleverest answer possible.
Then, we gave developers a cleverness slot machine that effused confidence in what is best.
So, it turns out we're not very good at solving anything, either.
I'm eternally grateful for all the circumstances that lead to me getting to know and love Terry Pratchett in my youth.
At a time, when Harry Potter could have become part of my identity growing up, it became Discworld instead.
One day, my dad brought back home "Men at Arms" and gave it to me, and I got hooked.
[It made cutting all emotional ties to Rowling's work much easier]
[Not a new insight, but one I want to share; inspired by a post of a mutual]
@lavaeolus Soul Music was mine. 🥰
And as a PS, /you do this sort of thinking already, probably/.
You just maybe do it only for celebrities and news-events.
"Oh, yeah, the cool trans hacker who popped the US No Fly list, yeah, fun fact I'm in nearby social circles with it."
"Oh, that crime/tragedy that involved a group of trans women? Yeah I.. uh.. one of my friends knew someone adjacent to that. They're taking it hard."
"I was actually at a meal and a few social events with that musician!" "One of the people at my local meetup knows someone who was doing rocketry programming during Project Mercury."
You HAVE those threads, those connections! You notice them for things that get labeled as Important.
But the person you're talking with, connecting to over this shared diaspora, IS important! So the same moves -- find what threads are coming from you, which ones you can point towards them. Both of you reaching out towards each other.
Try it!
@gaditb can guess at least two of these ^^'
Hello from Belval, Luxembourg!
Excited to be here for #OSCL26 - tomorrow there will be an entire track dedicated to decentralized technologies for #DigitalSovereignty - YAY!
Special thanks to @paolo and @Gina for your work putting this together. I can't wait!
New study: 72.4% of "Positive Position Papers on #OpenScience" are eventually but not immediately #OpenAccess, and only 54% are immediately OA.
https://royalsocietypublishing.org/rsos/article/13/9/252500.R2/483410
PS: Those are pathetic numbers, even if significantly better than the rates for research articles in general.
From the authors: "These findings indicate partial but incomplete alignment between expressed support and OA behaviour, highlighting the roles of funding conditions, disciplinary norms and journal-level OA opportunities."
@steveperry I know this (ex-pharmacist here, with the degree qualification and all). I’m still a bit twitchy because Putin’s Russia is much better at keeping the lid on news than it used to be, even with the internet A Thing there.
@cstross Plague is endemic in a lot of places. Guy in New Mexico -- where most cases arise in the U.S -- died from pneumonic plague last year. (Caught it from a cat, apparently.) Last epidemic we had in this country was in L.A. in the 1920's. The bacterium responsible is huge, compared to a virus, easier to block. Masks, hand-washing, staying out of crowds, improving the existing vaccines, antibiotics, all help prevent infection.
