The focus of the project is on closing gaps in Flatpak’s sandboxing story: new portals for audio, networking, VPNs, and spell checking, as well as infrastructure work on entitlements and intents. Whatever you may believe about the rest of the world "wanting to be Americans" it is adamantly not true of Canadians. I have been told NUMEROUS times that "we don't want to be you, you know" totally unprompted. It's a national ethos to not be us. They will fight us, with everything they have.

This is the first genuinely operational littleFedi instance.

It has been online since 1st July, is single-user (just me), and runs on a Raspberry Pi Zero W powered by NetBSD, directly on its SD card.

It consumes just under 1W.

Its database is this size:

Its average CPU load is extremely low.

It is perfectly usable both from the web interface and from Mastodon API apps.

You don't need Big Tech to communicate with others.

You don't need an expensive data center to exist online.

A Translate Science book club?

We're considering creating a Translate Science book club. The idea would be to choose a popular science book and invite one or more *translators* of the book to join us online for a book club style discussion, including their insights from translating scientific content in the book.

We're thinking books like Lab Girl by Hope Jahren, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, or something by Ed Yong or Mary Roach.

First, what do you, our Translate Science community, think of this idea?

Second, if it appeals to you, what books would you suggest?

Third, maybe some of you translate popular science books! Or maybe you know people who do. If you do, we'd love to hear from you and will keep you in mind if the book club materializes.

They will reject that descriptor out of hand, but they are absolutely united in the idea that Canadian is a cultural identity, that is is distinct from American, British, or French identities, and that their culture is more or less the secret 5 star restaurant you don't tell friends about so they don't shit up the place with their basicness. They will fight us. To the death.
