TransActual is deeply concerned by the decision to pause gender affirming surgeries for people referred via the Welsh Gender Service (WGS). Trans people using their service are now left without any NHS pathway to receiving the surgical care they need, in an extraordinary violation of NHS Wales’ duties as a provider of care.

@dsilverman They irritate me, too! @cultofmac
@estherschindler @cultofmac They irritate everyone, I suspect. Publications need to have more respect for their audiences.
Dear not-Spaniards: The destruction of the tents in Ceuta’s beaches last week has been been claimed by not less than the Sevilla FC nazi supporter group “Stukas Sur (SS)” and “Sancionados Sixtinos Firm (SSf)”. Not by “angry citizens” or “fearful locals”. A nazi group organised a trip, crossed the strait and did all that while the police just let them do.
Take that into account when your local politician uses those images to “warn about migrants”.
It’s nazis all again.

It sold for $34,375, saved you a click.
(The story is fun and worth reading, but these "hide the pickle" clickbait headlines are beyond annoying.)

@promovicz oh it's not about clarity, the word is clear enough. my issue with it is the misuse of it for half a century by bell labs and IBM and EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO MAKE A FILESYSTEM BECAUSE THEY LOVE HAVING POWER OVER OTHERS AND NOT SEMANTIC GUARANTEES!
@promovicz i also don't believe discrete is fully capacious

@hipsterelectron *swoops file to ePaper tablet* - yes, i see the point that it's an unclear term, and it gets unseemly when discussing non-determinism in my discrete case. it also seems incomplete/incoherent when dealing with non-discrete mathematical objects.
i could maybe say "discrete information metrics"? have an idea?

BTW to everyone who is in a rage about AI, you need to get off Masto now because we only exist in a data center. You are emulating bits of data and we generate money until the machines wake up and realize who needs money anyway.

Meta tweaks AI glasses to block some creepy recordings, but privacy risks remain
Meta fixes AI glasses to stop recording any time users cover up the safety light.

Can't decide if I like 'Pervert Glasses' or 'Glassholes' as a name for these.

A word of advice people, that comes from experience.
When you're feeling down because all the good people are dying, make stuff. I mean it. It doesn't have to be good, it doesn't have to be useful (tbh its best if its daft). It'll keep your hands busy and often it'll distract your brain too.
And at the end of it, you've made a thing. And maybe you'll feel less sad, maybe you won't, but I always find the world feels less awful when I've been making random stuff for the sake of it.
Good news: Meta had a terrible week!

What’s the point of posting or boosting this kind of stuff? Who does it help? Who is it for?
If those are your ideals, then why not live them? If the answer is because the goal is to share your ideals to a broader audience, your statement becomes contradictory.
What upsets me is that the only response to such a post is fostering a feeling of apathy and resignation. “Oh well, I agree but nothing I can do about it” (see the comments). Either you believe (as I do) that computation can lead to progress, or … wtf are you doing on social media and using computers in the first place, or worse, actively using your energy to build _more_ software.
Mark Zuckerberg had a bold plan to replace Meta staff with AI. Here’s how it imploded.
「 Major technical and security incidents, such as service disruptions and possible data leaks, spiked 40% from the previous year, with the time staffers had to spend “firefighting” them up 70%, according to the internal posts 」
