They have taken the bedroom and the hallway. We have barred the doors but cannot hold them for long. The ground shakes...meows, meows in the deep. We cannot get out. The shadow moves in the dark. We cannot get out. They are coming...
Instead of doom-scrolling, try these instead:
fog-wandering
forest-exploring
swamp-skimming
moss-browsing
book-scrolling
@adamgreenfield my family is only about two hours east and somehow I only found out how severe the impacts were yesterday. didn’t know about the organizing efforts, thank you!
@christa It’s crazy, right? Almost as if the mainstream media doesn’t give a shit about what happens to folks in a mostly Black, post-industrial town in “flyover country”!
the entire fucking problem with this analysis is that what it frames as an impartial and universal measurement of "certificate validation" actually means "is anyone employing public key cryptography in ways we don't know about"
it leads to "analyses" like this https://blog.yossarian.net/2023/05/21/PGP-signatures-on-PyPI-worse-than-useless from the guy i hate who sucks. this same class of argument was used to motivate removing pgp support (i.e. support for public key cryptography) from pypi
The tail of non-validated certificates comes from applications that use self-signed certificates with unusually high lifetimes.
IMAGINE! USING PUBLIC KEY CRYPTOGRAPHY TO REPRESENT YOUR OWN IDENTITY TO OTHERS ON THE INTERNET!
We placed a tracking device in a shipment of rare books to see which AI company was buying it, and found an Amazon facility where Amazon scans and destroys books.
@emox @politica @macfranc @sprawlit @emama A pensare che bisogna votare il male minore, e che dopo Schlein - Conte - Bonelli/Fratoianni c'è Renzi e forse Calenda...
Se poi ti sposti al centrodestra cos'hai? Forza Italia che si finge moderata ma fa gli interessi degli industriali e basta, poi se ti sposti ancora hai Meloni, Salvini, Vannacci... Siamo davvero messi politicamente malissimo
@elettrona @politica @macfranc @sprawlit @emama purtroppo siamo fregati, mi viene in mente una puntata di South Park ☹️

Probably the biggest surprise for me when I first joined big tech, which the article gestures at, is that people's personas on social media or blogs are not at all indicative of life inside a big tech company. If you assume that the loudest voices on social media from <Company X> are representative of life inside that company, then you're going to be sorely mistaken. The power hierarchy and information economy inside a company are totally different from what you see outside it.
@nolan what I learned about “tech people” with reach on social media, conferences and/or the news is, it’s a career choice.
You have these incredibly rare exceptions where people end up in the limelight despite their best efforts not to appear in it, but otherwise you have to make the conscious choice to be visible, or else you will not be able to accomplish annoying. Otherwise, external information economy will eat you and your productivity alive. It’s a full time job.
@matthewcassinelli What do you want me to tell you?
@Gargron I don’t need to lay out for you how to own up to mistakes instead of deleting them. You can be your own man.
Oh nooooo it's yellowjackets getting in your face season, the only time I'm afraid of wasps here 🙃
@idzie all the bugs in the yard get to live except the ground wasps who swarm me when I walk past. Nope!
@daemonspudguy I FIGURED OUT THE GRIFT!!!!!!!! I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW EXCITED I AM TO KNOW I CAN IMPLEMENT SAFE PUBLIC KEY CRYPTOGRAPHY USING SIMPLE BIGNUM ARITHMETIC!!!!!!
@daemonspudguy the NSA head fake with DUAL_EC_DRBG was pretty clever. easily their best work yet
My book is out!
This one was a passion project. It's about how we've used computers for writing, including nroff, LaTeX, HTML, and DITA. There's even a chapter in there about WordStar on DOS. 🤓
I added a ton of references and examples, so you can see how it works. I think the chapters on nroff and troff are my favorite, because they show a really interesting part of tech writing history.

Just really the most adorable, strappy young creature. I've missed these birds so much.
@span august a truly jarring experience.

The unhinged Elliptic curve posting continues! This thread has been absolutely wild to read and I love it.

When I was growing up, if I asked my mom to help me open a jar she'd say "what's my name?" and I had to tell her "your name is She-Ra, Princess of Power" before she'd open it 😄
it is ok to block people just based on vibes.
