Where are you from?
how do you think about how SSH public key authentication works (versus passwords) and what about your mental model makes you trust it?
please only answer if you _don't_ understand the math of how RSA (or elliptic curves etc) works, I'm interested in exploring what it means to understand the interfaces around public key authentication without actually learning number theory
(also obviously do not try to explain the math to me)
@b0rk Not a cryptographer, but I feel like I've got a good conceptual grasp of crypto so maybe not quite the intended audience. For me, keys/passwords have colour: blue for public, red for green. Giving a password feels like extending an arm into an alligator cage. A public key feels like extending a stick instead. I know which I'd rather have bitten off!
When I was younger, I became quite known in my country for being an avid backpacker. I was sometimes in the newspapers, with pictures of me on camels or in auto rickshaws.
My grandpa didn’t read a word of English, but when he passed I found a file of every single newspaper clipping about me that he had cut out carefully, in all languages.
I miss that deeply autistic man so much. He used to write my Chinese name all over my bags, umbrellas, anything I would take with me to travel. He collected clocks, and flashlights, and even today when we go to visit him at the columbarium, we still bring little clocks and flashlights and leave it there for him, instead of flowers.
@hollie Argh that’s so annoying! A similar one I’ve experienced (and the thing that made me have to stop using Firefox, years ago): websites that reimplement basic LOGIN FORMS in Javascript that for mysterious reasons doesn’t work in Firefox. If it was any ordinary website I’d have been like "go fuck yourself" but it was my bank 😤

A whole bunch of collaboration features are landing in @silverbulletmd soon: better concurrent edit merging, built in revision support (git backed), @ mentions, comments. This is going to be quite something. When fully ironed out in a few releases, probably reason to bump to 3.0.

still kind of flabbergasted at how useful RSS is as a thing for like, most of the informational and event-type stuff that people need, but how hardly anyone uses it, presumably bc most other options favor businesses and there isn't a lot of public awareness of the tech outside of cranks and power users

this is why im very skeptical of the idea that new technology will solve old problems, incidentally-- often we HAVE solutions that work, or could work well, but they're ignored or buried bc they conflict with the needs or desire of someone else. its not a technical problem, its a social or political one!

@jsbarretto @miawgogo I think that at least some of it is that his relentless brand building and making stuff about him grates on people. also every time I hear about him showing up at some event, "what an asshole" tends to be the overall impression.
