Everyone is praising this article, but I find it a bit disingenuous. He criticises Taylorism ("scientific management") but that's exactly what researchers are subject to, and the glam publication economy is at the heart of it.
Science magazine's business model, and the source of its editor's $700k salary, rely on this exploitation of academic labour. There wouldn't be an AI slop paper problem if it weren't for journals and ranking researchers by publication metrics, because there'd be nothing to gain from generating slop.

Weirdly, this was also the case in Sweden even into the early 20th century. Voting power was proportional to wealth, and even corporations got to vote based on how much capital they controlled. In a few districts, one person or company controlled more than half of all the votes due to wealth concentration.

A software vendor's tech support asked me to verify whether a configuration file existed and whether the path was correct.
I had already sent this:

The reply was:

The shell prompt contains the full path.
ls shows that the file exists.
cat shows its contents.
One would have thought this was reasonably conclusive, but apparently plain text remains an unverified hypothesis until photographed.
At this point, a modern AI would probably hallucinate less.
