@aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au oh noes! i'll hafta continue not using it... ever since they struckout the "Don't".
The tech sector's fall from grace should show us that the path to a more convivial life does not emerge from purchasing individual consumer technology.
Those devices are build to alienate and isolate us.
A lot of the time the "convenience" they promise mostly means "you do not have to meet and talk to other people".
OK, I'll just say it. Most science fiction and all cyberpunk is radically dystopian. Hopeful, optimistic visions of the future are sorely needed. The Solarpunk movement is onanistic rubbish, highjacked by 100 peripheral ideologies. We need a positive vision for the future or we'll never get there.
@MikeElgan I remember one writing instructor describing a novel as the record of a character, through strength of will, overcoming the threat of death (physical, professional, or emotional).
It is harder to create death stakes in a utopian society.
One counter to this is that Asimov often created mysteries to be solved centered around unexpected applications of the 3-laws of robotics in future, non-dystopian societies.
I know y’all are skeptical about AI, but I want to highlight this extract from my post. The open web is key!
“Some would argue the web should remain solely human-made — I'm thinking here of my fellow open social web fans on Mastodon and Bluesky. But I have to say I'm a pragmatist about this: the agentic web is here already, so we humans have to adapt. More than that: I think we can harness (to use a trendy term) agentic tools to keep the web open and ensure that it continues to serve humanity.”
@ricmac So what you're saying is that people who created and have maintained the open web for many years all of a sudden are too stupid to continue doing so without the help of an LLM? Quite the hill to die on if you ask me. Also, making the argument that something has to be accepted just because it exist, well, let's just say many things has come and gone throughout history.
@DaveMWilburn One thing I'm curious about is how large a kickback recipients of the fund payments will have to send back to Trump. 40% seems fair, but I'm not sure what the going rate is these days.
@mattblaze @DaveMWilburn
In past international economic work we used to use ~50% as the cost of corruption/grift for any projects to be completed in so-called "banana republics."
Welcome to the crowd??
me: (hours of effort reviewing technical standards and research papers, creating an annotated spreadsheet that compares different calculation methods across a month of our real-world data, uploading references to the shared drive, distilling it all into a few hundred words over email for the team, pointedly noting where, how, and why my results disagree with the goddamn bullshit machine)
my boss: "it appears that your conclusions do not match the AI, i don't get it, here is the AI doing the same thing you just explained was wrong" [end of email]
@redoak Whole-y Shee-it...
I would find it very difficult to keep it together in a polite way...
# Setting up custom site-specific search shortcuts in Firefox
For a couple of years now, I have been using generic search engines a lot less, and site-specific search engines far more. Shortcuts help me with this.
Just in case anyone is feeling a bit miffed about generic search engines this evening.

@neil Another optiom is creating a bookmark with a %s in the URL and adding a keyword to it.
who needs to "mine" meows? just skip breakfast one day and you'll be racking up the meows. :D
@paul_ipv6 🤫 they don't know that!!
I forgot to ever share the news on here, but I am excited to say I got selected for an educational residency to become a chaplain through a local hospital system! 🎉
Just got my official notification yesterday.
Doesn't start til the end of August, but for the first time since this time *last* year, I actually have positive job news!
Also means my near-decade in tech is over, for now. And with the way the AI craziness is going, I think I'm good that 🙂

@infobeautiful Washington doesn't have state income tax.
For tax year 2028 there will be tax on income over $1 million per year.

Why are kids addicted to goldfish? What the heck is Pepperidge Farm cooking them with??
@farah once you go flavor blasted, you can't go back.
For those who didn't understand this was a joke: it's a joke. The only thing decentralised about BlueSky is the people who get triggered when you suggest it isn't decentralised.
I've probably biased things, but... Wow! I got a half-decent sample-size practically all of whom dislike computing as it is today!
93% of 53 votes fantasize about leaving computing or rebuilding it in our image. A single vote expressed some satisfaction with computing as it is.
So now I'm curious: What would computing in your image look like?
I've been talking about what computing in my image looks like...
Incidentally my dream is a mix of:
* Microkernels
* End-user programming
* A cohesive UX around contacts & loosely-defined "files" rather than disparate/branded apps.
* Weird hardware focused on communication rather than calculation.
* Object Capability security
I'd be keen to incorporate CRDTs & DGGS *where* relevant.
And I'm curious how low-spec we could get away with without anyone noticing...
You?
2/1 + poll!
Did you know that you can earn up to 10,000 meows daily through Kittycoin mining, directly into your Kittycoin wallet, Kittycoin bank account, or any other Kittycoin payment system? :3
who needs to "mine" meows? just skip breakfast one day and you'll be racking up the meows. :D
I'm going to talk about space debris and satellite pollution on a remote panel for the Canadian Senate tomorrow https://sencanada.ca/en/senators/simons-paula/interventions/689271/37
I have gotten to the point now with public speaking that I don't get nervous before talks anymore (I never thought that would happen)
But this is pretty different from anything I've ever done before! Wish me just the right mix of academic training and anger and rural Sask to convey the many huge problems caused by unrestricted commercialization in orbit
@sundogplanets Will your presentation be televised? Curious on format since I din't see a commitee meeting for tomorrow.
In any event, good luck with your presentation !
