immediately i can see that knuth's style must have inspired the lovely approach in DH 1976 where they spend the entire time shouting out papers they love and giving deep, thorough citations to people who have solved some problem or other. so that's kind of nice, even though knuth (in the 1998 book especially) spends a great deal of time thinking about how to perform large-scale surveillance, and also daps up ron rivest way too frequently

so becausse the 1978 pohlig-hellman paper mentioned that one of knuth's taocp books had the sunzi remainder theorem they used, i finally cracked and opened up the knuth 1998 sorting and searching text

I wish I'd internalized maybe 20 years earlier that the only way free software could be liberatory, rather than merely, selfishly libertarian, is if the goals became not to secure our own freedoms, but to grant and guarantee them for other people. Today almost nobody can change the software they use, and as a measurable fact almost nobody who can the change software the use does. But even so: having those choices matters; securing the fact of them, evangelizing and defending that fact, matters.

The multi-stage Dockerfile gotcha that bites people: the pg gem compiles against libpq-dev but needs libpq5 at runtime. Leave it out of the final stage and production crashes on boot. My hard-won experience is that when Computer People like us say "does anyone still use these systems", the answer is _always_ "millions of Not-Computer People are locked into these systems via corporate mandates or enterprise contracts they despise and can never complain about because they have no say at all and pointing out how much these things suck the joy out of you just gets you fired."

It's easy to forget that for most people most of the time this is The Actual Experience Of Computer.

#Rails hides a lot of #Ruby language details, and provides a conventional structure for several things.

This is all done for very good reason, but it also means developers may not learn as much about bare Ruby when working exclusively with Rails.

Every time I've worked on a Bridgetown feature, I've learned so much, but Mimas was the first time I created a Ruby gem from zero, including setting up tests from scratch.
