I don't recall when I first encountered "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose".
But I remember the first and best translation of it I ever heard:
"The changer it gets, the samer it stays."
@GeePawHill I am mildly embarrassed to admit my first encounter with this phrase was from the X-Men in the 90s.
The more I think about it the more I'm convinced that the only way to beat the AI craze (other than the big companies being on the way to financial self-destruction) is consumer protection laws similar to what's used to prevent gambling and addiction—for example, banning chatbots that refer to themselves with personal pronouns. We should also ban (or excessively tax) environmentally wasteful uses such as video generation. A third pillar would be forcing quotas of production for CPUs, GPUs, memory and storage as the high prices for these are not only becoming an economic problem but possibly one of national security.

@matt_birchler i need an import from Readwise feature in QuickReads 🙃 I am so tempted to try it out but right now the "friction" is too high for me. Will definitely try it once some bigger projects settle down a bit 🙌🏽

@kajer I have always taken it for granted that people understood that the primary function of the cameras is to gather data for analysis. Perhaps I am wrong.
@evacide @kajer I will cash in many years of in-depth user ethnography to underpin my confident assertion that people broadly *have no idea* how these systems work, which aspect of capture/processing/analysis happens where, etc. etc.
Ask someone – just about anyone – to relay to you their folk model of how the apparatus works sometime. It’s not at all their fault for not having a more accurate schematic sense of things, but it is, uh, enlightening.

Fun Fact: Los Angeles by design has a very weak mayor, unlike cities like, say, New York. Most power (no pun intended) officially is in the hands of the city council, but many observers feel that it's actually the city-owned LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power) that really runs the city! In my many interactions with their technical teams over the years, I've always been impressed. Yesterday I had the opportunity to watch an electrical job being done where a trainee doing the actual work was being observed and guided by three other employees and it didn't fail to impress. And four pairs of eyes on the work -- excellent!
@lauren I spent a summer interning for a municipally-owned water/power utility company in their environmental/pollution department. I came away impressed with the lineworkers with their skill-sets and dedication. Municipal companies get a lot of criticism, but my experience is they were much more customer focused than commercial companies motivated more by profit.
