I tried making a plot to sort of demonstrate crowding in orbit that would be caused by the 5 companies that have now asked for tens to hundreds of thousands of satellites on sun-synchronous terminator orbits. I wanted to show equator-to-pole, but there's so damn many satellites in all of these I had to show a narrower range of angles in order for the points to not all run together. Anyway... here's what the techbros want for us in Earth's new rings they want to construct

I think this social media thing might not be for me. While I found cool people, I get the feeling that I’m having too many mood swings from following so much of the world in only one place.

Perhaps I should change who I follow, but slowly it seems to be more of a burden than it’s worth. It is also the most “expensive” service I host, so shutting it down would remove quite a bit of (data and information) noise.

@mariusor @silverpill that is more or less what @ariadne confirmed about pleroma, it will store Activities even if it doesn't understand them, allowing for post-facto front-end representation!

@sebsauvage Super article. Je suis aussi gentiment en train de passer à deltachat depuis quelques mois et ça fonctionne vraiment bien!
Par contre y a une chose qui serait bien de préciser par rapport au spam, tu as presque raison qu'il est difficile mais pas impossible. Le fait de pouvoir créer plusieurs comptes est à double tranchant. Si tu rends to url publique, quelqu'un peu te spammer et si tu le bloques, il peut juste recréer une autre identité pour te spammer à nouveau. Ce phénomène est surtout problèmatique pour les groupes car tout le monde est admin.

L'approche que je connais pour se défendre c'est de ne pas partager son url trop librement et si tu veux la partager librement c'est bien de le faire pour une "identité reservé au public" vu qu'il est possible de créer plusieurs identité facilement. C'est comme ça qu'il faut se protéger un peu, on oeut faire pareil pour les groupes. Et surtout si on veut un groupe complètement public, c'est peut-être pas la meilleures idée (sauf si les channels fonctionne bien dans ce cas).

@berniethewordsmith never had one - I looked at their media prices and blew my summer job money on a fujitsu 230mb MO drive instead. I still have it and all the media, but I've not used it in years. I really should get the data off it, if it's still readable 😅

sigh. i don't want to start up over there but equally i don't want to get evicted for not paying my rent, and i might find some new customers if i try another platform.

but i did try it once, briefly and a while back, and i didn't last long. so i'm wondering whether it's the sort of place that i could just post sculpture photos and not really engage beyond that? i don't like the idea of doing that, but i can't maintain a presence in two places, i'm *not* leaving here, and i just didn't feel ok with the atmosphere on bluesky when i tried and wanted to hide. (and i'm not doing a bridgey account because i know that upsets people)

if anyone has any insights/ideas, i'd be very grateful.
