Passkeys were designed to directly address the flaws with passwords.

1. Passwords are phishable. Passkeys won’t even let you use them on the wrong website, and the “origin” you used them on is signed into the response a website gets. This protects even us, smart people who can sometimes be in a rush, from phishing.

2. Passwords are reusable, opening people up to attacks. We would never re-use a password, but most people do. Passkeys are guaranteed to be unique and strong.

3. Despite websites’ best efforts, passwords can be leaked from websites because they’re inherently a symmetric secret shared between you and the website. With passkeys, websites are storing a public key; there’s nothing for them to leak.

So how secure are they really? They’re a next-generation technology designed to address the sundry problems with passwords that cause people harm every day.

There is inconvenience with passkeys if you don’t set up an app to manage your passkeys across all your devices and your family’s devices. Get over that hurdle and you’re golden.

Regarding ickiness — yes, some websites seem to be shoving passkeys down throats. No means no and websites should respect “no”. Other websites and apps are being respectful about it. But passkeys are not a scary big tech play with an ulterior motive — they’re a W3C-backed web technology. Open standards, thoughtfully designed.

The word ‘queen’ is distantly related to the first part of ‘gynaecology’ and the second part of ‘misogyny’.

It’s also related to Norwegian ‘kone’ (wife) and ‘kvinne’ (woman), but they’re not full cognates.

While ‘queen’ comes from Proto-Germanic *kwēniz (wife), ‘kone’ and ‘kvinne’ stem from *kwenōn (woman). In English, this became the disparaging – and now archaic – word ‘quean’ (ho).

The semi-transparent menu has several entries for the story I read (#29) — one entry I guess for each location marked. The multiple entries on the list seem a little mysterious at first, but it makes sense.

I'm on mastodon.social and it's currently running version v4.6.0-alpha.7+pr-38939-5f3002f.

Again, because I don't normally look at my own profile, I have no idea when this heinous formatting began in the development process.

Because my version is an alpha, I hope that means there's plenty of time for Mastodon to fix this self-inflicted mistake.

Because it's Sunday, I'm going to put this another way with a scriptural reference.

You can't use a sword as a plowshare (the cutting part of a plow). It's the wrong shape, doesn't have a curve, and will probably break after a couple of passes through hard soil.

To fulfill Isaiah's prophesy that "they will beat their swords into ploughshares" one doesn't simply put the sword onto a plow handle and go at it. It requires smiths' forges, skilled smiths who knows how to make plows, people who are ready to give up their swords, and people who want plows to use. Those imply ethics, politics, and collective action.

Current social technology has become violent. It can be remade. But it requires ethics, politics, and collective action.

One often dwells on fights like Standing Rock or Line 3 where occupying a site of extraction turns into a protracted battle in which the forces of capital, police and even military end up being too much to bear.

But we must also remember fights like that which was just won at Pe' Sla, a Lakota sacred site at a mountain meadow deep in the Black Hills of so-called South Dakota. Young native warriors and accomplices occupied drill pads for two weeks on this site - and the company proceeding with the project decided it wasn't worth it - they've announced their withdrawal (for now).

A victory worth celebrating! That said - Pete Lien & Sons, the graphite extractivists and still threatening many other sites nearby - not to mention the specter of exploratory uranium drilling. The fight to protect Paha Sapa continues.

@bazbt3 I've no idea. It's probably 6061 or similar. But I've not taken one fully apart yet to check what all the parts are. It's anodised, dunno if that'll affect things.

@mastodonmigration Until today I personally didn't know Bluesky's default algorithmic timeline (the "Discover" feed) is also powered by a secret black box closed source algorithm.

Another red flag for me with how much has been talked about the problematic nature of algorithmic social media and not being able to tell what exactly goes into what the algorithm decides to boost.

You all know I'm trans. So, I care a LOT about presentation, about how I look and how I'm perceived.

In a medium that is primarily text-based, I would think it's important to preserve the manner in which the author's text is formatted. ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT AUTHOR IS DESCRIBING THEMSELVES!

Look, I might as well just change the BIO text field to:
