I also think some of this stuff never really mattered if it worked or not, just knowing the other side was working on something insane was and effective tool. While the rest of his class were drawing father's day cards for their dads, my youngest boy was painstakingly applying little wax dots to paper to make me a braille card. The card said:

The background is that he didn't have a braille alphabet to work with, but there was a braille sign on the toilet, so he copied that. It's the thought and effort that counts, right? And you work with what you have, right? Man I laughed.
This kid is bizarrely quirky in the best possible way. He also put together an audio card in Garage Band which was equally unhinged, again in the best possible way.
