I have a fun hackathon style challenge in mind;

I want to see teams take a #Matrix app and try to implement #ActivityPub in it, using and taking notes for any FEPs necessary on top of the AP spec. Or, conversely, take an ActivityPub app and try to implement Matrix in it.

In each case, I don't mean adding Matrix app style features to the AP app, or vice versa. I'm talking about re-implementing the existing features using a different protocol. To see if it can be done, and how hard it is.

@strypey that sounds like a tech challenge not a hackathon challenge.

Uh ... OK. What's the difference?

@strypey Many hackathons aren't tech constrained. Most use open data but the focus is a rough working model not necessarily use of a particular software. Team members always don't have to know how to code nor use specific coding packages.

Some hackathons will focus on a particular tech but not the ones I've helped run, like GovHack (hackathons using open data sets maintained by governments).

All trout are fish, but not all fish are trout.

An event where teams chose a fediverse or Matrix app, and tried to reimplement it using the other protocol, before the event finished, is not like all other hackathons. But it certainly sounds like a hackathon to me.

Why is this distinction without a difference a hill worth dying on? 🤔
