If you are going to #39c3 it’s not too late to make sure you’re not the one killing or disabling the sole maintainer of code you rely on.

- wear a mask. The drug stores in Hamburg have FFP2 masks. If you won’t wear a mask at the venue, at least wear a mask in transit on the way back

- buy tests and use them! if you have symptoms, test. if you have no symptoms, test

- get your flu shot

- wash your hands and carry hand sanitiser

Bird flu has made the jump to humans a few times now, in a country with a gaggle of anti-vaxx assholes in charge of public health.

Con crud could be the start of the next pandemic.

What @akareilly says.

This year it's H5N5, and a strain you do not have antibodies for:

https://edition.cnn.com/2025/11/21/health/washington-bird-flu-death

I had a real flu only once in my life, and I was a strong and fit 15 year old. I did survive, but it did not feel like that for a full two weeks, and it took another four weeks to recover after that.

It is not an experience I want to repeat.

Get both Covid and Flu shots, in time for them to be useful.

Mask the fuck up. In the train, in the bus and on the fucking congress.

And it will also prevent unauthorized photos.

“The Washington health department also recommends flu shots for anyone who may come into contact with domestic or wild birds. Although the regular influenza vaccine can’t protect against bird flu, it reduces the slight chance that someone could get sick with both viruses at once and cause the bird flu virus to mutate into something that would spread easily among humans.”

If someone is immunocompromised, the virus has more time to mutate in their body.

If you have had COVID-19, this could be you.

Don’t help bird flu make the leap to human-to-human transmission. Don’t brew more COVID variants.

Germany is one of the worst places I can think of for this to happen. Strong passports and an anti-vaccination movement have already contributed to outbreaks of measles in other countries. A little European history repeating.

Wear a mask.
