Australia has issued passports with X gender markers as a matter of standard practice since 2011. Yet, 14 years later, the Australian flag carrier won’t let me check in using their app or kiosks like everyone else, and I have to wait in queue for the check in desk—a problem I’ve never had with Air NZ.

A screenshot of the Qantas app asking for passport details. A field for “Gender” is outlined in red; the two options are “Male” and “Female” and an error message says “Select your gender as shown on your passport”.

@Hierarchy Legally: maybe, but the exemption provided by s. 43A(1) of the Sex Discrimination Act might give them an out.

QF didn’t even start offering web check in for international flights until 2017, a full six years after Australian X passports became commonly issued. And yet.

@daisy The lady I spoke to when calling their support number about that problem really struggled to understand the question I was asking (the ultimate conclusion seemed to be that neither Qantas nor the government actually check that field against your passport details, so who the hell knows why they're even asking us to enter it)

@ancoghlan Tbqh I think next time I will just fly Air NZ. They handle my passport just fine.

@ancoghlan Although that said, I flew QF back to Australia last year and it was fine. The absence of check in kiosks (the only option was to do a mobile check in and use the kiosk for bag drop) might just be a weird quirk to do with ADL not having a separate international terminal?
