@TheBreadmonkey this seems to be a general problem with journalists explaining science or technology. The writer doesn't fully understand the thing so they are unable to explain it clearly.

Fediverse is not even a difficult concept to explain to normies.

It's basically what if thousands of twitters, but also, you can follow and talk to anyone from any other Twitter.

@TheBreadmonkey It’s the Linux effect, 10 years ago the media’s didn’t had any clue about Linux and started making stupid articles about it, spreading misconceptions and stereotypes who are still alive today in the mind of the commoners. This is the same things for the Fediverse today.

@TheBreadmonkey I like to compare it with churches (mostly because those relate well with people I know): servers are like churches, they have their members, but they are friends with other churches and members of one can talk with people from others, and each one has their rules and their leaderships. The fediverse is like the religion from those churches: once you join one you don't need to join again, you are already in.
(Of course this comparison works better in my city where there are lots of churches with different beliefs but that all are under the same religion umbrella, and, like there are instances that defederate other instances, there are churches that dislike other churches (e.g. Pentecostal hate Catholics and non-denominationals))

@TheBreadmonkey That may be a marketing issue.

It could be "Every social, everywhere and all at once" or "one social to rule them all" for the LotR-fans. Right now, it's still more like: twitter, without elon and insta without zuck and you can follow everyone, but somehow when you google it, it doesn't even say that. To the average user, it just says [complicated].
