Essentially, the government shutdown represented a Democratic Party effort to present itself as opposing the Republican agenda despite lacking the political power to halt it through the instruments of the state.
It was always performative.
As Donald Trump consolidates autocratic control, real opposition will require grassroots forms of outright resistance. No one is coming to save us.
So here’s a different proposal for how to address the shutdown of the US government: make it comprehensive and permanent.
