@fresseng That said, I'm not against making it a bit longer. Although it also already stops if you click anywhere on the page (except “Continue to...”) or press any keyboard key.
I'll experiment with making it ten seconds.

Initial status: so far the server is not copying very well with public traffic. 😓 Please be patient and perhaps check back in another day.
Tech talk: From what I can tell, any erroneous behavior you might be seeing (unable to search or follow accounts, error messages on the website about timeouts or proxies) all result from the software struggling to keep up with requests.
Edit: I think we're all good now! The cause of the slowdowns is fixed. 🙂 Anyone still having problems with the accounts?
The direct cause of the server lag has been fixed and Encyclia has been stable for the past 12h. The speed isn't where it should be yet, but you should be able to look up accounts, follow them, and visit the website without timeouts or error messages. 😀
The next thing we're working on are improvements for interoperability edge cases, which will be invisible for most of you. But making sure other servers can properly talk to us reduces the technical burden for everyone involved.
Dear @gotosocial users: we see you, even though you can't see us! 🥲
Well, you can see this account. But any accounts hosted on https://encyclia.pub aren't visible to you.
The way we use @fedify, the ActivityPub framework that powers our connections, uncovers some issues in the code. Curious fedi developers can find details here: https://github.com/fedify-dev/fedify/issues/473
Attempts at workarounds have sadly been fruitless, so please join us in waiting for a fix in Fedify. ❤️🩹
By the way:
As a consumer of the public ORCID API, Encyclia is not allowed to generate revenue. To be on the safe side, we don't accept donations either. However, we are happy to be making a modest contribution out of our private pockets to @fedify on @opencollective here: https://opencollective.com/fedify
If you'd like to donate some money to improve Encyclia's functionality and reliability, @fedify is the best place to do so! 🙂
Over the past few days we added a couple of small features to the Encyclia website:
1. The home page at https://encyclia.pub now has a little statistics blurb about people following Encyclia accounts.
2. The profile text box on the interstitial account pages has gained a “Follow” button to make it a bit easier to interact.
Alpha testers can now see short interaction statistics about their own account after signing in.
The work continues! 🏗️
I am wondering about the five second delay on the interstitial page. I find it a bit too short to just realize what is happening to you, not even mentioning trying to read the text.
I would vote in favor of making it longer (double?) and including a button to go to the actual orcid record for the hasty folks.
I am thinking of this page replacing the orcid link on my personal page (https://fressengeas.net) while keeping the orcid icon.
@encyclia And this stands on the shoulders of a revamp of Encyclia's internal task scheduler, which can now properly manage things that should be done on a regular schedule. (Like updating stats.)
The list of things I need to get done before 1.0 is shrinking, although work on performance and resource use is also still ongoing.
@encyclia
Yes ! It works a lot better now 👍👏
@encyclia That's AWESOME. Any chance you'd like to discuss it on a future episode of Fireside Fedi with me? :-D
@firesidefedi Yeah, absolutely! 🙂 Maybe after the end of the alpha test? Would like to get the word out once people can fully use it!
This is awesome! Thanks for asking me to be part of this alpha test.
It's listing the featured papers I selected as well.
For those of us in Research who want to promote our work its a great way of linking the fediverse and our ORCID profiles.
@encyclia looks like the profiles are federating now 🎉
@encyclia I'll tag my own Encyclia account to see how this goes: @0000-0001-7264-8496
Bracing for some kind of technical collapse. 😬 But also curious what people will say!
I succeeded at following you ! But not myself. Tagging here to try : @0000-0002-5534-712X
