Kelly's Shenanigans 馃嚚馃嚘
@Kellyshenanigans@yeg.bike  路  activity timestamp 11 months ago

I made a 6ft tall macrame Christmas tree, having never done macrame before. It's plastic free, made of 100% cotton rope and metal rings. I started with a pattern for a 42in tall tree, and extended it, making a pattern for one section, and using a wall hanging pattern for the last section. It was originally supposed to be 7ft tall and have a trunk, but people (and cat) liked to climb inside, so I left it open. #FibreArt #macrame

Thread for construction process: https://yeg.bike/@Kellyshenanigans/113426531815530647

From the inside of the tree, laying on the floor, looking up. From this angle, can see 4 concentric metal rings with a variety of dark green rope knot patterns tying the rings together.

My finished macrame tree! It's made of dark green rope and metal rings. The metal rings increase in size from 4in diameter to 42in diameter, forming a cone shape. There's a total of 7 metal rings, forming 6 sections of rope. Each section of rope has a different knot pattern. The top is about 7ft off the floor, the bottom is about 1ft off the floor. The rope on the bottom is trimmed to about 3 inches from the bottom ring, and combed out, so that there's about 200 3in tassels at the bottom. It's hung from a chain in our bay window.

Decorated. Our Christmas tree decorations are not designed to be aesthetically pleasing, they each have memories attached. So decorating the tree is full of "oh! I remember this! This was when..."
Lots of our decorations are homemade, or commemorate events. We'll be adding another "new home" ornament this year.

The same macrame Christmas tree as the post above, now decorated with rainbow LED lights, silver garland, and a variety of ornaments. Lots of the ornaments are homemade and/or pop culture. There are bike chain stars and a candycane. There are a melty bead Darth Vader, Squirtle, R2D2, and Thomas the train among the ornaments.

And stored. I bought a 48in wreath bag (which has internal hooks at different points to hang different sizes of wreaths, all were used) and it will eventually be hung in the basement. Light enough, it's easy for me to move on my own. It collapsed flat, we left on the lights and garland.

A large green wreath bag, on a concrete floor, next to a concrete wall, surrounded by suitcases and boxes
